Jazz Virtuoso Oscar Peterson Gives Dick Cavett a Dazzling Piano Lesson (1979)

Duke Ellington once called Oscar Peterson the “Maharaja of the Keyboard” for his virtuosity and ability to play any style with seeming ease, a skill he first began to learn as a classically trained child prodigy. Peterson was introduced to Bach and Beethoven by his musician father and older sister Daisy, then drilled in rigorous finger exercises and given six hours a day of practice by his teacher, Hungarian pianist Paul de Marky. “I only first really heard jazz somewhere between the age...

Back in January of 2019, Wild Nothing shared "Blue Wings," a standalone track left over from the sessions for their 2018 album Indigo. It would turn out to be the only music Jack Tatum's project released last year. But just as the ball dropped, Tatum unveiled another new song plus plans for a … More »

2019 NBA East Semifinal: Milwaukee Versus Boston

We have two teams that swept their opponents to advance to the second round. Milwaukee dominated the Detroit Pistons in all the four games to move on. While the Celtics didn’t dominate the Pacers, but they showed at times why they’re one of the favorites in the East. While Giannis Antetokounmpo gets all the attention and one of the favorites to win MVP, he had help. Eric Bledsoe played some of his best ball and Brooke Lopez looked like a man on a mission. In this series, they should get back M...

Are Flexible Jobs Just A Fantasy We Promise Working Moms?

In the four years since I became a mother, I’ve had about six different working situations. First, there was the fact I had no job when my daughter, Lucy, was born. During my pregnancy, I had been working as an hourly contractor for a big company. The department head said they would be happy to let me come back to my position after I took an (unpaid) leave, but, due to budget constrictions, they would have to cut my rate by 30 percent. Then, there was the traditional corporate job I applied for...

The 60 Best Songs of 2018

60. St. Vincent - "Fast Slow Disco" Just because an album is available to purchase doesn't mean the songs are complete. While most acts will add different nuances to their hits in a live setting, Annie Clark is still very much obsessed with the tracks that made up her stellar 2017 effort Masseduction. She took her string-drenched highlight from that record "Slow Disco" and, while touring, turned it into an amped-up dance number, discovering that underneath all the opulence, it was a fist-...

The Best Shoegaze and Dream Pop of 2018

None Significant shoegaze storylines came around full circle last year, and in 2018 the plot thickened. Back in February, Ride chased Weather Diaries with the Tomorrow's Shore EP, four songs that didn't make the new album but together show the band's current curious and experimental side. This fall, Miki Berenyi of Lush announced Piroshka, her new super-group with KJ McKillop of Moose, Justin Welch of Elastica, and Michael Conroy of Modern English. Their debut album, Brickbat, is already due ou...

Wild Nothing – “Canyons On Fire”

Next week, we'll get to hear Indigo, the new album from the Virginia-born and LA-based indie-pop traveler Jack Tatum's project Wild Nothing. On the new LP, Tatum has shed whatever remains of his lo-fi past, leaning instead into a grand and arena-sized sense of '80s dreaminess. We've already posted the early tracks "Letting … More »

Wild Nothing – “Shallow Water”

It's almost like Wild Nothing records are meant to be listened to in August, when the sun feels stretched out and the September's chill looms somewhere ahead. Jack Tatum, the mind behind the dream-pop project, never fails to put out hazy chillwave that complements the languid end of the summer. Recently, though, Tatum's sound has … More »

Takashi, Red and Art

In The Wall Street Journal this week, I interviewed contemporary artist Takashi Murakami (go here). He's the father of the Superflat art movement. You're probably most familiar with his colorful designs for Louis Vuitton bags popular a bunch of years ago (see pattern below). Superflat art features two-dimensional color works of pop subjects influenced by Japanese manga and anime. I caught Murakami's show at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts a couple of months ago and wanted to interview him for...

The Sonny Clark Trio: The 1960 Time Sessions

The most elusive concepts in music are rhythmic ones—what it means to "rock", "lay back", to be "funky". In jazz, that tricky concept is "swing". We know it when we hear it, of course, but the precise formula for swinging is hard to write down, though it seems to have something to do with playing notes in a syncopated pattern that creates a feeling of momentum, particularly relative to the playing of other instruments at the same time. But do you see how unsatisfying and limiting th...

Jon Hendricks (1921-2017)

Jon Hendricks, a singer, songwriter and lyricist who pioneered vocalese—the art of crafting words to famed jazz solos—and was a co-founder of the vocal group Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, died November 22. He was 96. Jon died on the same day as producer George Avakian. (See my obit and complete interview with George here.) I interviewed Jon in 2009 for JazzWax. Here is my complete interview with him: Jon Hendricks' pure sense of swing, poetic word-play and conversational vocalese remain unmatche...

Art Tatum Was The Best Pianist Of All Time. But...

How well do we really know Tatum? Read further, and the contradictions begin to pile up. You’ll learn that he was heavily influential, but you will also read the opposite — that his style was so personal and technical that he had little actual influence.

This Woman's Horrific Story Proves Why You Should Never Put Your Feet On The Dashboard

Putting your feet on the dashboard during a long car ride may seem perfectly natural and harmless — Audra Tatum certainly thought so until she was involved in an accident while sitting in the passenger seat."All my life I had my legs crossed and my foot on the dash," Tatum told CBS News affiliate KTVQ. "My husband always told me, 'You're going to get in a wreck someday, and you're going to break your legs.'"Tatum always assured him she would put her feet down in time, but during a quick ride to...

Channing Tatum Says The Magic Mike Live Show Is All About Worshiping Women

There's a reason the Magic Mike love is still going strong since the first movie was released in 2012: it's a movie that respects its audience. For the first time, women are the ones doing the objectifying, and star Channing Tatum has turned that into a bigger conversation about sexuality. That conversation is a huge part of the Magic Mike Live show that came to Las Vegas in March of this year, and it's the reason the spectacle is extending its run."We just kind of did something that we thought...

Channing Tatum Delivered Booze Around L.A. & Customers Rightfully Flipped Out

Channing Tatum gave Saucey customers the surprise of their lives when he showed up on their doorsteps to deliver his new vodka, Born and Bred, over the weekend, Us Weekly reports. The actor and dancer teamed up with the alcohol delivery app to promote the launch of his new boozy brand, and honestly, it was one of the most funniest marketing ploys we've seen yet. Interview: Aaron Diehl

Pianist Aaron Diehl has a way of making you think about what you're hearing. This happens on the ballads Single Petal of a Rose and Blue Nude from his The Bespoke Man's Narrative (2013). But Aaron also can make you think when turning up the heat with staggering command, as he does on Uranus and Broadway Boogie Woogie from Space, Time and Continuum (2015). His ballads tend to have a Charles Mingus-like brooding quality while his uptempo works exhibit an impeccable technique as his fingers fly ov...

The Sweetest Things Celeb Dads Have Said About Their Daughters

When we first saw Ashton Kutcher, he was playing a dimwitted, goofy, wildly handsome high schooler in a little TV phenomenon called That 70's Show. Blink, and now he's sitting in late-night armchairs getting bleary-eyed while speaking about his daughter with Mila Kunis. We've seen these celebrity dads grow from prodigal rappers, like Kanye West, and boyish actors, like Matt Damon, to fathers over-the-moon for their daughters. We've never felt so old. These committed, enthusiastic parents take an...

Why I Highly Recommend Seeing Magic Mike Live With Your Mom

“Do you think we’ll need these?” my mother asks me, pulling a neat stack of dollar bills out of a paper envelope she had been keeping in her purse. We are both standing at the mirror in the bathroom of our Las Vegas hotel room, before we head out to a strip club, and my 55-year-old Chinese mother is worried that she’s not doing it right. As far as Vegas trips go, this one was unremarkable in many ways: We were two women applying their lipstick under unflattering hotel-bathroom lighting, with pla...
