Takeaways from Talladega: Wallace's crash a blow for an underfunded Richard Petty Motorsports

Bubba Wallace was racing near the front of the field early in Sunday's race at Talladega. The underfunded single-car team only really has chances to compete at tracks like Daytona and Talladega. Wallace triggered the first crash of the race when he was pushing Ryan Blaney on lap 11 and collected Clint Bowyer, Kevin Harvick, Denny Hamlin and others in the wreck.

NASCAR Mailbag: Could heat races solve qualifying woes?

I am trying to get an answer to my question regarding qualifying in the Cup Series. I am a long-time fan but after watching the Duel races at Daytona and the qualifying fiasco at Fontana I would like an answer. I think a complete revamping of the current "timed" qualifying should be considered.

Whatever Happened To Bubba Wallace, NASCAR Hotshot?

Just 17 months ago, Richard Petty hired Darrell “Bubba” Wallace Jr. to drive his famous No. 43 stock car full-time. At the time, it looked like a winning combo in so many ways: Petty, The King, a winner of 200 Cup races and a legendary seven-time champ, was paired with Wallace, a talented African-American who really had paid his dues. And in his first race in the 2018 season, Wallace finished second to Austin Dillon in the Daytona 500. Wallace started the race seventh and steered clear of severa...

Kurt Busch's on-track strategy: 'Avoid (No.) 17 at all costs'

After some aggressive driving early in this 2019 season from Ricky Stenhouse Jr. — including his typical superspeedway daring in the Daytona 500 and a run-in with Erik Jones in Las Vegas — fellow drivers now take note of where the No. Roush Fenway Racing Ford is on the track at all times. Kurt Busch remarked as such in a tweet Monday evening.

Weirdo O’Rourke

Friends of the young Bill Clinton and Barack Obama spoke of the special glow of promise they had about them, even back in their early twenties. Angels sat on their shoulders. History gave them a wink and said, “Hey, good lookin’, I’ll be back to pick you up later.”Robert O’Rourke? Not so much. He was just a weirdo. That isn’t my word, it’s how his friends saw him. “You’re supposed to make friends with future secretaries of state, not weirdo musicians,” one O’Rourke pal, Adam Mortimer, told the N...

Ford executive intervened in Daytona squabble among drivers

The global director of Ford Performance said the manufacturer intervened between Ford drivers after the Daytona 500, which saw a Toyota driver celebrate the win and Ford drivers fume at each other afterward. Shortly after Denny Hamlin won the Daytona 500, Ford driver Joey Logano exited his car on pit road and confronted fellow Ford driver Michael McDowell about McDowell not pushing him on the final lap. McDowell was upset with how he had been treated by Ford drivers earlier in the race.

Ryan: The inside story of the secret deal that changed the Daytona 500

In a Saturday morning meeting, Hendrick Motorsports and Joe Gibbs Racing (with help from Toyota Racing Development) hatched a plan to battle Ford's 12-car squadron that had dominated Speedweeks (sweeping the top three of most qualifiers Thursday) and much of restrictor-plate racing for the past year. Though some of the key players declined to be identified, it isn't difficult to glance at the rosters for Hendrick, JGR and Toyota and find some obvious ties. There are several names who h...
