Our Flag Means Death Teaser: Taika Waititi's Pirate Comedy Heads To HBO Max

Pop culture has always been preoccupied with pirates and adventures taking place on the high seas. "Treasure Island." "Robinson Crusoe." "Peter Pan." Artists have never been shy about trying to capture the freedom, the swashbuckling, even the dignity (in a manner of speaking) that pirates offer in movies, shows, and literature. This latest effort to do so isn't exactly as distinguished or high-brow as any of those other examples. No, "Our Flag Means Death" has oddball filmmaker Taika Waititi's f...

James Gunn Says A Peacemaker Character Will Return For A 'Big' DC Movie In The Future

If you haven't watched "Peacemaker" on HBO Max yet but are interested in the grand scheme of the DC Extended Universe, you may want to remedy that situation because according to James Gunn, a character from the show is going to show up in the DCEU in a very big way. Gunn recently guested on an episode of the TV's Top 5 podcast where he put to bed the rumors that "Peacemaker" exists in a separate universe, and instead exists well within the confines of the DCEU. Better yet, a recurring character ...

Joss Whedon Says Justice League's Cyborg Storyline 'Made No Sense,' Calls Ray Fisher 'A Bad Actor'

It's hard to believe that the Snyderverse controversy first began almost five years ago. Zack Snyder departed the set of his "Justice League" film in 2017, but it wasn't until 2020 that allegations from the cast would derail the career of Joss Whedon, who'd been tapped to reshape the film in his own image. Whedon's fall from grace seemed intrinsically linked to comments from Ray Fisher, who was one of the first to address the director's "gross, abusive, unprofessional, and completely unacceptabl...

The Idea For Peacemaker's White Dragon Began On The Set Of The Suicide Squad

If you've checked out the first three episodes of the HBO Max series "Peacemaker," then you know that Peacemaker's dad Auggie (Robert Patrick) is a real jerk. His behavior makes Peacemaker (John Cena) look like a really good guy by comparison, which is part of the reason Peacemaker is so screwed up in the first place. In a press junket attended by /Film, series creator James Gunn explained that he first started exploring the character with Cena on the set of "The Suicide Squad." Fatherhood and i...

'Peacemaker' lets John Cena and James Gunn cut loose in a silly 'The Suicide Squad' spinoff

The opening credits for "Peacemaker" feature John Cena and the rest of the cast in a choreographed dance number that is joyously goofy, setting the tone for what's to come. If only this HBO Max series spun out of "The Suicide Squad" was consistently as good, despite (and partly because of) the freedom afforded writer-director James Gunn to utterly cut loose.

Batgirl Star Leslie Grace Reveals First Look At Her Costume

Despite being introduced into the "Batman" comic book series all the way back in 1967 (technically 1961, but I'm talking Barbara Gordon here), Batgirl is finally making her way into the live-action DC Extended Universe, with Leslie Grace set to play the iconic character in an exclusive film for HBO Max. Not to be confused with Batwoman, the Batgirl character has appeared in multiple animated series and "The Lego Batman Movie," but this is our first bonafide chance to see a live-action Batgirl si...

Jeremy Irons Hasn't Seen The Snyder Cut, Says 'It Couldn't Be Worse' Than Theatrical Cut

While "Zack Snyder's Justice League" may have been the Holy Grail for any rabid fan (emphasis on "rabid") who once tweeted #ReleaseTheSnyderCut, at least one of the film's supporting cast members is content to let it gather dust in his back closet or junk drawer or wherever an esteemed British actor keeps unwanted gifts. Jeremy Irons made his debut as Bruce Wayne's faithful butler and Batman ally, Alfred Pennyworth, in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice." He reprised the role in "Justice League...

Peacemaker Was Influenced By Better Call Saul And Its 'Sad-Sack' Protagonist

"Peacemaker" is finally streaming on HBO Max, having successfully spun off from director James Gunn's well-received DC hit, "The Suicide Squad," and expanding on the backstory, motivations, and emotional layers of the villain/anti-hero/diaper-wearing vigilante, Peacemaker. John Cena used every ounce of his star power to bring the complicated character to life, though not everyone agreed upon the initial announcement that the bloodthirsty, "Peace at all costs" antagonist would necessarily be the ...

That's right, "Degrassi" is back and it's heading to HBO Max, the official home of all things chaotic-teen related. This new saga marks the sixth series in the franchise, following "The Kids of Degrassi Street" (1979-1986), "Degrassi Junior Hig...

How James Gunn's Peacemaker Pushes The Limits Of Superhero Television

Writer and director James Gunn's HBO Max series "Peacemaker" pushes a lot of boundaries. Gunn previously said on-set that he couldn't believe the studio was letting him film the series, and he later called it a "funeral for Warner Bros." during Comic-Con. "Peacemaker" toes the line between being funny and offensive, and often revels in its own vulgarity. Yet, somehow, it manages to have a warm squishy center full of introspection and socially relevant themes. Gunn showed us that he could balance...

The Girl Before Trailer: Hair-Raising Residence Has Renter Reeling

"The Girl Before" isn't a remake of Alfred Hitchcock's 1958 psychological thriller, but it hangs onto the film's elements of psychological obsession with women and repeating motifs between them. As a voice in this trailer points out, someone is "acting out the same psychodrama with new players allotted the same role." Based on the 2016 novel of the same name by J.P. Delaney, "The Girl Before" has been adapted by Delaney and newer co-writer Marissa Lestradem (writer of 2022 environmental thriller...
