Anti-Abortion Dem Rep’s 2018 Primary Foe Gearing Up For Another Run

The woman who nearly defeated one of Congress’s most conservative Democrats last year is moving towards a likely rematch, she told TPM on Tuesday. Businesswoman and activist Marie Newman came just over 2,000 votes short of defeating Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-IL) in a 2018 primary that pitted a number of national progressive groups against Lipinksi’s union allies and Chicago’s Democratic machine. Newman is now gearing up for another shot at the congressman, and plans to make a final decision on a ru...

House GOPers Ask For Proof That Feb Cohen Hearing Won’t Be ‘Media Stunt’

Two Republicans on the House Oversight Committee are urging Michael Cohen’s attorney to prove that his client’s upcoming February 7 public testimony before the committee won’t just be a “media stunt.” In a Tuesday letter, House Freedom Caucus Members Jim Jordan (R-OH) and Mark Meadows (R-NC) asked Guy Petrillo for firm answers on the scope of Cohen’s testimony, claiming that Cohen’s public relations representative in the probe, Lanny Davis, cautioned that much of what Cohen can say will be re...

At Least Four Dem-Led Panels Will Push DeVos On Her Most Polarizing Policies

WASHINGTON (AP) — Wielding control of the House and a new set of investigative powers, Democrats are preparing to bring Education Secretary Betsy DeVos under the sharpest scrutiny she has seen since taking office. DeVos has emerged as a common target for Democrats as they take charge of the House and its committees, which carry the authority to issue subpoenas and call hearings. At least four panels are expected to challenge DeVos on her most polarizing policies, among them her overhaul of cam...

Trump Stared At Walls, Wandered Out Of Room While Ryan Explained Health Care

In excerpts from former communications staffer Cliff Sims’ new White House exposé, President Donald Trump is at times irate, paranoid and petty. And as seen in one episode with former House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI), he could be rudely disinterested. According to passages obtained by the Washington Post, Ryan at one point was standing in the Oval Office to explain the Republican healthcare plan to Trump. While Ryan was talking, Trump wandered around, staring out windows and at walls and ...

Trump Presses Ahead on State of Union After Pelosi’s Suggestion to Delay

The request was made to House officials, according to White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders, and is another escalation in his battle with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The House sergeant-at-arms, one of the recipients of the White House request over the weekend, is awaiting a response from Pelosi’s office. Pelosi last week said Trump should postpone the address because of security concerns stemming from the shutdown and consider delivering it in writing instead of in-person.

House Democrats turbocharge committee probes of Trump

The little-noticed change, made since the Democrats took over majority control of the House earlier this month, will let staffers of House investigative committees take testimony from subpoenaed witnesses without a lawmaker being present. By eliminating complications with lawmakers' schedules, the change will let staffers work faster and range more widely, said former staffers and sources inside the committees that are launching several inquiries into Trump and his presidency. The importance o...

‘Trump Slump’: Gun Sales Down In Shifting Political Climate

When gunmakers and dealers gather this week in Las Vegas for the industry’s largest annual conference, they will be grappling with slumping sales and a shift in politics that many didn’t envision two years ago when gun-friendly Donald Trump and a GOP-controlled Congress took office. Some of the top priorities for the industry — expanding the reach of concealed carry permits and easing restrictions on so-called “silencers” — remain in limbo, and prospects for expanding gun rights are nil for t...

Freedom Caucus members remain some of President Donald Trump’s staunchest and noisiest allies in a Democratic-controlled House under Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
