Grenell’s Past Foreign Clients Make Him Unprecedented Choice To Lead Intel Community

Acting Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell is many things: ambassador to Germany, right-wing provocateur, and Instagram aficionado. But what may present the biggest problem is his past as a media consultant for foreign political parties, governments, and businesses – and whether that work strayed into being a foreign agent and would have complicated his ability to receive a security clearance. Former national security officials told TPM that Grenell crossed what has traditionall...

Frontrunner Sanders Fields Incoming Fire In Last Debate Before Super Tuesday

For perhaps the first time in a debate during this Democratic primary election cycle, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) was treated like what he was — the frontrunner. With days to go before South Carolina votes and not much longer before 14 other states weigh in on Super Tuesday, Sanders was a clear target for his competitors in Charleston, South Carolina, who in large part have stayed away from attacking him head-on in other debates. That changed in the debate’s second minute, when former New York...

Desperate Democrats Brawl in Chaotic South Carolina Debate

The stage in Charleston was set for a pile-on. Senator Bernie Sanders stood in the middle of the seven-candidate field, flanked by competitors all too aware that his lead in the Democratic primary is on the verge of becoming prohibitive. But rather than hammer Sanders, the desperate candidates hacked away at one another. Sanders took plenty of incoming, but Tuesday’s Democratic debate devolved into a chaotic, all-way melee. Elizabeth Warren continued her attacks on Michael Bloomberg; Jo...

Bloomberg Kicks Off Debate By Saying Russia Wants Sanders To Win Nomination

Former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg kicked off his second presidential primary debate appearance by alleging that Russia supported Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) because they wanted President Donald Trump to be re-elected. “I think that Donald Trump thinks it would be better if he’s president,” Bloomberg said, asked about Sanders’ economic agenda. “I do not think so. Vladimir Putin thinks that Donald Trump should be president of the United States, and that’s why Russia is helping you get elect...

7 Democrats Took the Stage for the Last Debate Before the South Carolina Primary: The Biggest Moments and Highlights

We’re in the endgame now. On Tuesday night, seven Democrats faced off in Charleston for the last Democratic debate of February, just a few days before the South Carolina primary. Crucially, it is also the final debate before Super Tuesday on March 3, when more than a third of all delegates for the Democratic National Convention will be decided. So far, 2020 has been Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders’ year. The self-described democratic socialist swept the Nevada caucuses on Feb. 22, winning 24 pl...

The revelation by U.S. District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson was another highly unusual twist in the Stone saga, which has included a barrage of tweets from President Donald Trump, threats by the attorney general to quit and the departure of the entire prosecution team followin...

‘Better That We Die Laughing Than to Die Scared.’ Meet the Syrian Dad Who Taught His Daughter to Laugh During Bombings

(BEIRUT) — Abdullah Mohammed would do anything for his daughter, even forcing himself to laugh with her at the sound of bombs to help her overcome her fear. In Idlib, that’s a lot of laughter. The province in northwestern Syria is the last opposition-held stronghold in the war-ravaged country. It has been the subject of a ferocious military campaign and relentless bombardment by Russia-backed Syrian government troops since early December. More than 900,000 civilians have been on the move si...

John Bolton tries to slam Bernie Sanders for Castro remarks, rams headlong into more recent history

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) got some blowback Monday for comments he made on Sunday's 60 Minutes in favor of late Cuban leader Fidel Castro's literacy program. It's not clear many people outside of Florida or under age 70 have strong feelings about Castro anymore — he died in 2016, after all, and Cuba is now mostly known as a hot vacation spot. And as Sanders also said on 60 Minutes, it's not like he thinks current, nuclear-armed despot "Kim Jong Un is a good friend," and unlike ...

Syrian Refugees Fleeing Assad’s Onslaught in Idlib Have Nowhere Left to Hide

Syrian-British humanitarian worker Mohannad Othman faces a stark choice. It occupies his mind as he drives his two children to Arabic language classes in the Turkish border city of Gaziantep, where he has lived for six years. About 100 miles south of here, in an enclave of Syria’s rebel-held Idlib province—the fate of 90 children and infants, including 20 babies in neonatal incubators—hangs in the balance. They are patients in a pediatric hospital, funded by the World Health Organizatio...
