Even in defeat, ISIS' ideology inspires mass murder

Five years ago, ISIS reigned over 34,000 square miles in Iraq and Syria and collected billions of dollars in taxes and oil revenues as well as from looting banks. Today, its so-called caliphate is virtually gone. And yet on Sunday, Peter Bergen writes, the continued influence of ISIS' ideology became gruesomely apparent: A terrorist attack, one of the most lethal since 9/11, killed at least 321 people at churches and luxury hotels in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka attacks show Islamic State influence outlives caliphate

The devastating bomb attacks in Sri Lanka, claimed by Islamic State jihadists, show that the influence of the group's extremist ideology remains dangerously intact even after the collapse of its so-called caliphate in Iraq and Syria, experts say. Over 320 people were killed in a string of deadly suicide bomb blasts on Easter Sunday in Sri Lanka targeting churches and luxury hotels. Colombo said it believes that the little-known Islamic extremist group National Thowheeth Jama'ath (NTJ) was behi...

How Sri Lankan jihadists' connections to Syria may hold key to understanding terror attack

The path from Sri Lanka to Syria is not a well-trodden one. It is thought that only several dozen Sri Lankan Muslims travelled to the Middle East to join Islamic State. The number is far lower than most other surrounding South Asian countries, which have had a large number of their nationals make the journey. The Sri Lankan government warned in 2016 that 32 Muslims from four “well-educated and elite” families had already gone to Syria. According to Jihad Watch, scores of them returned to Sri Lan...
