2018 Fall Festival in Six Parts: 5) Celebration with another neighborhood association

It has been a tradition that our danjiri meet up with that from another shrine close to ours on the second day of the festival. So this event builds cooperation and friendship within and among the local neighborhoods. There are taiko and dance performances by children followed by the crowd pleasing mochi maki. I seem to be the only one avoiding the rice cakes as I dodge them behind my camera as they are being tossed down from the tops of the danjiris. [Author: [email protected]

Justine Marjan and Kitsch Prove That Hair Pins Aren’t Just For Kids Anymore

This week, Justine Marjan dropped a line of rhinestone-encrusted hair accessories with Kitsch, and they have taken social media by storm. The crystals are arranged in the form of four words - "Feelings," "Damn," "Glam," and our personal favorite, "Drippin" - or as straight pins. They've been seen in the hair of celebrities and models, elevating top knots and styles, from classic to glam. Justine Marjan has taken to Instagram to show us how to wear her pieces. On her page, you'll see "Drippin" an...

Nikon Z6 4K video beats Z7 footage and is more like the A7III

There have been a few issues reported with the Nikon Z7’s video capabilities. Talk of banding and pixelation that come as a result of how the Nikon Z7 captures full frame 4K. DPReview has just posted the below test footage, though, shot with the Nikon Z6 and it shows that it’s a very different animal, getting […] The post Nikon Z6 4K video beats Z7 footage and is more like the A7III appeared first on DIY Photography.

Paris Hilton Visited Mexico And The Memes In Spanish Are Out Of Control

Los mejores memes de la visita de Paris a Xochimilco This past week, I noticed that the Mexican meme accounts I follow on Instagram started posting meme after meme of Paris Hilton holding Mexican babies, washing lettuce with farmers and dancing with abuelas, and I needed to know what was behind this. When I googled it, I found out that Paris had traveled to Mexico where she presented her clothing line, launched her newest perfume, Platinum Rush, and dropped by San Gregorio in Xochimilco, ...

Lele Pons Wore The Falsies Of The Future To The Latin Grammys

Before any celebrity walks down the red carpet, they get a full once-over from the glam squad. The fashion stylist tucks and tapes so there's no risk of a nip slip. The hairstylist gives one more blast of hairspray to make sure there are no flyaways. And the makeup artist does one last spritz of setting spray before checking to make sure the face looks good from every angle. Because lipstick on the teeth or a slipping false lash could end up in a Twitter trending topic or an Instagram meme the ...

The Fuji X-H1: An Aside

[Just to be clear—this is not a review. This is the bit that I couldn't justify putting in the review. I'm still working on the review. Sorry it's not here yet. I'll get back to work now.  :-) —Mike] I've been wrestling with what to do with these thoughts. What follows just doesn't seem to belong in a camera review. And yet it's a significant part of my reaction to the Fuji X-H1. These ideas don't really "attach" to the object—the camera—in any meaningful way, and they're not really relevant to ...

Of course, the rest of us can't help but be envious, which is why when people do manage to put their lives on pause in the name of wanderlust, the story is often big enough to make the local news. In The Punk Rock of Business, Jeremy Dale stresses the importance of humility not only to distinguish yourself but also because it is an accelerator of success. He states that “the ability to keep a sense of humility is probably the single biggest lesson” included in his book. He shares this example of humility: Shigeru Miyamoto is arguably the greatest video game designer, developer, and producer in history. He has worked for Nintendo since 1977. Social Media on the Road

It’s the early 1950s. A young man from America in a dusty derby cap hops out of a cab on a rainy night in Paris, and hurriedly shuffles through puddles and cobblestone to a dimly lit phone booth to place a call to his travel agent back in Florida. He’d just met a girl in a cafe and suddenly wants to cancel his flight to Tangier in the morning and instead book a train to Madrid in three days to pursue his new romance. Under his arm is a wet paper map of the city, its creases weathered from use. H...

Where Are They Now? The Medium Format Heavyweights of the Film Era.

Today we are continuing our recent theme of looking back at where the big players of the film era stand today. In this article, we are going to look at the big players of medium format and how they faired with the transition to digital. Some were lost, some incorporated, but others are still going strong. Medium format film photography was perhaps a bigger segment of the professional market than today’s “medium format digital”. Although relatively expensive compared to 35mm film, the cost ratio ...

Instagram "influencers" phished and accounts stolen

Instagram influencers are easy marks for phishers: they are unlikely to be security-savvy, are easily taken-in by marketing patter, have huge easily-grifted audiences, and Instagram won't even give them their accounts back afterward. Taylor Lorenz: For young influencers with no direct contacts at Instagram or Facebook, it can be nearly impossible to retrieve a stolen account. Hackers will change the contact email address and phone number and reset the username so the account is impossible to fi...

This Week in Photography Books: Robert Osborn

Kids today are a bunch of sissies. (So they say.) I’m willing to bet that’s always been the refrain of the older generation, but I know for sure it’s a popular opinion at the moment. Because I heard it directly on two occasions in the past week. Last Thursday, I had a beer and a plate of tacos with two of my teaching mentors, Jim and Ed. These guys are role models for me, as they each represent the Platonic ideal of a Renaissance Man. (How’s that for mixing time periods and metaphors?) Each wo...
