Editing the Baker's Dozen

I now have about 300 submissions for the Baker's Dozen, so it's off to work on that. Here's my process: First I search for "BDMuseum" in Mail, which brings up all the submissions. I've looked at most already when they came in, but I'll go through them again slowly and look again. After waiting at least a few hours and maybe till tomorrow, I'll go through and flag all the ones I think are prospects. With that many submissions, there will probably be 30–60 that I'll flag. Then I'll go through the...

Open Mike: Protein and the Power of Propaganda

["Open Mike" is the often off-topic, anything-goes Editorial Page of TOP, in which the Editor indulges himself slightly more than usual on whatever happens to be on his mind. It usually appears on Wednesdays. Oh well, maybe it doesn't usually.] - It's amazing how effectively false "facts" can suppress the truth under the right conditions. Propaganda (currently also called "fake news," although that charge is often hurled, gaslighter-style, against real news) has real reach and power. For examp...

What Happens When We Seek Status Instead of Goodness?

This month, more than a dozen wealthy parents will appear in a Boston federal court, accused of using a criminal “side door” to get their kids into prestigious schools. Among those on the U.S. attorney’s star-studded list of indictments are Lori Loughlin, who played Aunt Becky in Fuller House, and Felicity Huffman, a Desperate Housewives regular. These parents bribed coaches with hundreds of thousands of dollars, took fake recruiting photos, and had their kids cheat on tests, all to score admiss...

The "Floating Crease" Is The Instagram Beauty Trend You Need To Try

You don't have to love '90s fashion or want a Britney Spears-inspired belly button ring right now to know that trends always come back. However, rare is it that they reappear in the exact same form. For example, when colorful eye makeup reappeared on the scene earlier this year, the looks were brand new — and totally unexpected. The same can be said for the cut crease. Makeup artists and bloggers have hit the refresh button on this eye look, which traditionally embodied the heavy, dramatic look ...

Snap is channeling Asia’s messaging giants with its move into gaming

Snap is taking a leaf out of the Asian messaging app playbook as its social messaging service enters a new era. The company unveiled a series of new strategies that are aimed at breathing fresh life into the service which has been ruthlessly cloned by Facebook across Instagram, WhatsApp, and even its primary social network. The result? Snap has consistently lost users since going public in 2017. It managed to stop the rot with a flat Q4, but resting on its laurels isn’t going to bring the goo...

Why Leaders Need to Think More Like Professional Gamblers

ONE OF the unfortunate side effects of living in an age of accelerating technology is having to deal with increased uncertainty. When faced with uncertainty, how should leaders react? Should they make a big bet, hedge their position, or just wait and see? We tend to see situations in one of two ways: either events are certain and can, therefore, be managed by planning, investment, and reliable budgets; or they are uncertain, and we cannot manage them. You can, however, embrace uncertainty by ad...

Evanescent art.

View this post on Instagram A piece from back in 2011 when I was living in Santa Cruz. First time sharing it. The 50Rwas by far the most affordable medium format option in its class at the cost of $4500 USD($5700 CAD). This Week in Photography Books: Oliver Wasow

Last week, I dropped 1800 words on you. That’s a lot. I also resuscitated a dormant format here on the blog, by writing what was essentially a straight travel piece. (And only one measly picture at the end?) This morning, I received an email from a Denver-based reader suggesting that they have quite enough people living there, thank you very much, and perhaps I shouldn’t entice any more. Point taken. Before too long, they’ll have a solid line of helicopters flying the rich folks West to the sk...
