Impressions from the First of May in Berlin Kreuzberg

photos: Vismante Ruzgaite.  Berlin on the first of May, Labor Day. What was once a day of protests and revolts where the Kreuzberg anarchists and punks would throw bottles at the police, set cars on fire and smash shop windows is nowadays one of the biggest street parties taking over most of Kreuzberg 36 and some other parts of the city. You could argue that Berlin has lost its edge and that the youths now frolicking through the streets with beer in their hands have totally forgotten about the...

The $7 Mascara Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Keeps In Her Makeup Bag

There's no doubting the influence of New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Open Mike: To Your Health! (6-Week Update)

["Open Mike" is the anything goes, often off-topic Editorial page of TOP. It appears on Wednesdays.] - Happy May Day! Regular readers remember that I wrote a post last March about WFPB (whole food plant based) eating. At the time, several readers challenged me to come clean about how it had really been working for me personally. I admitted that I was still cheating quite a bit, like eating quite a bit of candy (a sweet tooth being my lifelong weakness) and taking other liberties. So I asked fo...

Daily News Roundup: Facebook’s Privacy Shift

Yesterday at the keynote for Facebook’s F8 developer conference, several key Facebook leaders took the stage to announce new additions to the product. But it was CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s statements that deserve the most attention. It’s been a rough couple of years for Facebook. Scandal after scandal, leak after leak, and breach after breach, there hasn’t been a lot going for the network that wasn’t, well, bad. Facebook has compromised user data and broken user trust time and time again—and Zuck sa...

Old Norse, mystics and race cars: is Älvdalen the weirdest village in Sweden?

It is the place where the witch hunts began – and it still boasts its own language and strange rituals. Photographer Maja Daniels relives three freezing years in a cabin in ÄlvdalenIn 1926, the yearbook of the Swedish Tourism Association described the village of Älvdalen as “a community with a dark insular spirit” where locals were “shadowed by distrust and unease”. The Power of a Thank You Note

Travel blog by Travels of Adam (Hipster Blog) – Travels of Adam (Hipster Blog) - A few weeks ago I received a postcard in my mailbox. The postcard came from my friend Dani—but it wasn’t just any postcard. It was a thank you letter! Even though I’m a frequent traveler (and postcard-sender) myself, it’s still pretty rare that I get mail. So, upon seeing a card sitting in my metal mailbox, different sized and much more colorful than the typical white-enveloped letters I get from my banks, it w...
