Interview with Terry Kyle – CEO of WPX Hosting

I had a lot of positive feedback on my last post titled “Why Photographers Need A Blog” and thought it would be a good idea to do a follow up with an industry expert on web hosting, Terry Kyle the CEO, and founder of WPX Hosting. Terry is a well-known figure in the hosting game and has turned WPX Hosting into the most reliable and well-secured WordPress web host in the world. Terry is also an animal lover and advocate for sheltered cats and dogs. He spends much of his free time volunteering...

Big Bokeh on a Budget

Many lenses that are popular (at least aspirationally) these days are big, heavy, expensive and fast (BHEF for short, if you'll tolerate it). It's downright odd: when I started photography I shot Kodak Plus-X, which had an ASA/ISO speed of 125, but which I rated at an exposure index (E.I.) of 80. On top of that I used a medium yellow filter, which cut out another 2/3 stops of light. And my two "prime" (single-focal-length) lenses had maximum apertures of ƒ/2.8. When T-Max P3200 was introduced (w...

Social Media Resolutions for 2020

From Baby Yoda to VSCO Girls, social media culture and content was full of new memes in 2019. But social usage behavior and consumers expectations from brands remained relatively the same from previous years: consumers expect brand transparency from the causes they support to the content they create; consumers expect more experiences online from shopping to augmented reality. Helping People Change

MOST OF US want to help people. And typically, we go about it by trying to correct a problem. We focus on what we think they should be doing. Makes sense. To us. But it frequently does not create sustainable change in the other person. Richard Boyatzis, Melvin L. Smith, and Ellen Van Oosten suggest a different approach in Helping People Change. Instead of coaching people for compliance, we should be coaching with compassion. The conventional view of coaching is that it is an activity where, “ba...

Marketing

I used this title for possibly the most regrettable blog post I have written on AVC back in 2011. My friend Alex’s post on the topic this weekend has made me revisit my thoughts on the subject of marketing. Alex starts off his post with this assertion: 2019 was the year when VCs and startup founders soured on paid acquisition. I am not sure if that is true, but if it is, it suggests a dramatic change in the startup playbook. Back in 2011, I wrote: He said “every company needs a...
