I was struck by the pictures in this interesting and somewhat offbeat feature in the NYT*: "A Luxury Dish Is Banned, and a Rural County Reels." Politically you could have any of a range of reactions to the story, but let's not go there. In a nutshell, a traditional delicacy for wealthy people is banned in New York City as being gratuitously cruel to animals, echoing many other such bans worldwide, but the poor people who produce it—some of whom have had a dreadful odyssey to reach safe haven—are...

How to photograph a clear liquid bottle using inexpensive gear and unusual modifiers

Bottles are always a fun and challenging photography experiment, especially ones that contain crystal clear liquids like vodka. I don’t buy vodka often and when I do, it rarely tends to stay full long enough to have any time in front of the camera, but Dustin at Workphlo has definitely put some thought into photographing […] The post How to photograph a clear liquid bottle using inexpensive gear and unusual modifiers appeared first on DIY Photography.

In the film, which recounts the disastrous Fyre Festival, King reveals that at one point Fyre CEO Billy McFarland ordered him to perform oral sex on the Bahamian Minister of Customs in exchange for shipments of Evian water. Illicit THC dealers are raking in the bucks on Instagram: Report

Not so dank, dudes. NBC News reports that “countless purveyors of illicit THC products” are selling illegal cannabis or fake cannabis products in plain sight on Instagram, Facebook, and other social media platforms. “They are facilitating a public health crisis,” said Timothy Mackey, a professor at the University of California San Diego. His team has done extensive research on how social media platforms are used to sell various illicit products. The US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) sa...

Ben Watson makes surprising revelation about 2019 season with Patriots

Ben Watson apparently battled more than Father Time last season. The New England Patriots tight end claimed in an Instagram story Friday he played through a torn Achilles during the 2019 season and thanked a body coach at Tom Brady's TB12 Sports Therapy Center for helping him play through the injury. Watson didn't reveal when he suffered the injury, but he played in every Patriots game after making his season debut in Week 7.

The Power of Bad

BAD gets into our head and it stays there leaving very little room for the good in our lives. We tend to focus on the bad, even in the face of a lot of positive things. Our brains are wired that way. It’s the negativity effect: the universal tendency for negative emotions and events to affect us more strongly than positive ones. John Tierney and Roy Baumeister (the first researcher to identify the negativity effect) describe the phenomenon well in The Power of Bad: We’re devastated by a word ...

This Week’s Baseball Insanity Is the Perfect Scandal for Our Age

So there are football games this weekend? Yes, you can be forgiven if the NFL’s conference championship games on Sunday have suddenly slipped your mind. Somehow, talk of baseball trash cans and buzzers and burner accounts have knocked football off the front page on the eve of the second-most important day for America’s most popular sport. Baseball, America’s slog of a national pastime, has been locked in a years-long battle to win the hearts of digitally distracted youth. Well, the game now...

The Best Work I Saw at the Filter Photo Festival: Part 4

Hark! What’s that I see up ahead? Do you see it? Why, I daresay it’s light up there, far away, at the end of that tunnel yonder. I’m sure I see it. Do you? It was 46 degrees F yesterday, with a deep blue sky and lots of sunshine. At the hottest point of the day, in the sun, that feels like 56F, which means there was an illusion of Spring yesterday, for the first time this year. Spring, I say. Spring! At one point, I was only wearing a T-shirt, it was so warm. A T-shirt! Now, beyond that, (not ...

Smudge the Cat Is the Real Star of the Woman Yelling at a Cat Meme and He’s Still Living for Drama

If there’s one inescapable cat to out-purr viral pets in recent memory, Smudge often comes out on top. Most internet users recognize 6-year-old Smudge from the “woman yelling at a cat” meme, but the fluffy white rescue who has also been called “confused cat at dinner” had his first big meme moment in the summer of 2018. Smudge sat at the dinner table with his family, like the real human he might just be on the inside, with a plate of salad in front of him. His eyes darted into the great bey...

The Five Minute Rule to Procrastination

I’m actually utilizing this exact strategy right now as I type these words. Facebook is being sued by 4 tech firms who want Mark Zuckerberg to give up control and sell his majority stake

Four tech firms – two of which are now defunct – are suing Facebook on antitrust grounds and demanding that Mark Zuckerberg sell his majority stake in the company. The four little-known firms banded together to accuse Facebook of running "the most brazen, wilful anticompetitive scheme in a generation" in a federal lawsuit filed Thursday. The four complained of Facebook's acquisition of WhatsApp and Instagram, and said the firm's planned integration of the services would cement the firm's domin...
