View Cameras

I've been at least low-level obsessed with view cameras since I started in photography seriously in 1980. I used to go by Ferrante-Dege, an old-line camera store in Cambridge, Massachusetts (I loved and miss old camera stores), to "visit" a resplendent Deardorff 5x7 they had on semi-permanent display (it was for sale, but didn't sell, so it was there for a long time). It was profoundly beautiful—well, to my photogeeky young self it was—and also profoundly unaffordable, which made me covet it all...

making light in the dark

Today was a typical Houston winter day: rain all day long, chilly, damp, soupy. The last time the weather was like this, I had errands to run. I didn’t really think about what to wear out and about all day, but given that colour has become a habit for me nowadays, I grabbed a relatively new, screaming pink sweater, and threw it on. I remember at some point, I ended up at a Whole Foods grocery store. The guy behind the check...

TikTok is reportedly on the hunt for a US-based CEO, and it could be the company's latest step to distance itself from ties to China

TikTok, the viral app for creating and sharing short videos, may be searching for a CEO based in the US, Bloomberg reports. The CEO would oversee TikTok's day-to-day operations and "non-technical functions," and work alongside the app's two most senior executives: TikTok chief Alex Zhu, who is based in Asia, and Vanessa Pappas, who heads TikTok's US operations. The move may help to distance TikTok from ByteDance, its Chinese parent company, and appease concerns that the Chinese government play...

READ: DC Attorney General Sues Trump Inaugural Committee

D.C. Attorney General Karl Racine sued President Trump’s 2017 inauguration committee on Wednesday, accusing it of failing to comply with non-profit regulations by booking a $1 million ballroom at the President’s D.C. hotel. Inaugural committee staff knew that the booking was overpriced, and the ballroom was barely used, the lawsuit alleges. Trump’s inaugural committee brought in a record-setting haul of $106 million, while holding far fewer events than previous inaugurals which raised and spe...

Yo Facebook & Instagram, stop showing Stories reruns

If I watch a Story cross-posted from Instagram to Facebook on either of the apps, it should appear as “watched” at the back of the Stories row on the other app. Why waste my time showing me Stories I already saw? It’s been over two years since Instagram Stories launched cross-posting to Stories. Countless hours of each feature’s 500 million daily users have been squandered viewing repeats. Facebook and Messenger already synchronized the watched/unwatched state of Stories. It’s long past ti...

The inventor of Facebook's 'like' button reflects on building products that are ethical under his new values-oriented boss, who has compared Facebook to cigarettes (FB, CRM)

Salesforce Chief Operating Officer Bret Taylor on Wednesday spoke with Insider Global Editor in Chief Nicholas Carlson during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.  The former chief technology officer of Facebook has played a major role in shaping big technology companies into what they are today: He built the "like" button for a social network that would later be acquired by Facebook. Making the Most of Lightroom Classic Templates

One of the main reasons we use Lightroom Classic is that it makes our entire digital workflow so much more efficient than using a combination of other tools. A key to getting the most out of Lightroom Classic is to gain mastery over all of the various types of templates that you can employ at different points in your workflow. A template (or preset) is essentially a glorified text file that allows you to save some set of information that you can call into use over and over again, which is mu...

These are the top 2020 wedding trends, according to the experts

We’re pretty excited to see where the year takes us, Cakies. Color is back in a big way and who doesn’t want to see a bright, bold palette done oh so right? From that different-but-coordinated bridesmaid look to unexpected palettes, this is the year for the color-loving couple. But as you might expect—while some trends are more + more over-the-top, others settle in with the opposite approach: micro weddings are totally in, and off-the-grid elopements are here to stay. Our first (and possibly fav...
