Kentavious Caldwell-Pope shakes off bumpy start, finds perfect fit with Lakers

PHILADELPHIA — It was meant to be a putback. An easy shot. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope threw the ball back up toward the rim almost as quickly as he collected the rebound. Then, his heart sank as the ball stuck between the rim and the backboard – an unlikely result that added to his run of misfortune whenever he tried to do something that’s come naturally for so much of his life: score. This was not the plan. Feeling a special season ahead, Caldwell-Pope devoted more time than ever this offseason t...

Random Excellence: Benoit Paille

William Gibson. Photo by Benoit Paillé. Or not so random—this is the portrait of William Gibson that adorns the article I quoted yesterday. It breaks every rule of portraiture, and it's brilliant. It looks splendid as a full page of the New Yorker print magazine. I can't stop looking at it there. The head is placed just subtly northwest of dead center in the frame; the flash implies a brief moment of lucidity in gloom; the heavy foliage in the lower right anchors the picture in chaos from whi...

Las Vegas' slogan will no longer be "What happens here, stays here"

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority is changing the city's official slogan from "What happens here, stays here." As we all know, nothing that happens actually stays in Vegas anyway because it all ends up on Instagram with that slogan as the caption. In any case, the new slogan, several years in development but not yet officially announced, is: "What happens here, only happens here." From ABC News: The new tourism slogan is expected to be officially unveiled in a 60-second ad duri...

Morning snow.

Time: 7:23. Actual sunrise time was at 7:21. No visible sunrise today, and the snow was verging into rain. At 33°, it was too hot for the jacket I had on, the jacket that worked a few days ago when it was 8°. You really do have to add 15 or 20° to the temperature to decide what to wear if you're going to run, even if, like me, you only run in an casual, unambitious way. This Week in Photography: China and New York in the 80’s

Everyone wants to be down-to-earth? Right? It seems like one of those compliments that is universally understood to be a good thing. It means relatable. Grounded. Empathetic to others’ experience. Humble. Polite. Thoughtful. Respectful. For some people though, (yes, they’re often rich,) the lure of being fake, affected and pretentious is just too strong. In this case, I’m thinking about Gwyneth Paltrow, the occasional actress, full-time GOOP lifestyle guru/ magnate, likely vegan, and occasiona...

Teaching By Heart: A Guide For Great Leadership

DESPITE what the title Teaching By Heart might imply, it is really a book about servant leadership. It is a journey into self-awareness so that you can serve those you lead or seek to influence in spite of your self-doubt, anxieties, and insecurities. It is a remarkable book and a perfect means to refocus your leadership development this year. Professor of management and organizational behavior at Harvard University, Thomas DeLong, writes, “I’ve found that the best teachers are also leaders, an...

Godox is releasing a lens-sized AD300Pro strobe that may double up as a video light
