The Art of Ben Burlock

I sometimes wonder what would be missing from my life without Instagram as I've come across so many stellar small shop makers, rod builders, fly tiers and artists of all sorts.  One new recent find was artist Ben Burlock.  I get a real kick out of his style and asked him if I could share a few of his most recent pieces of artwork and tattoo work with this post. Ben wrote...  "I've been a tattooer for the past 11 years and an avid fly fisherman for much longer than that.  I'm based in the beauti...

Out and About

On May 11th France started a slow deconfinement. Many people, mostly young, used it as an excuse to get out with friends and drink in public places so a rule was passed that there could be no public drinking. I don’t know if that will stop groups from gathering on streets and along the Seine. In my case, it was windy so I didn’t go out wuss that I am. I did go out the next day to pick up a free mask at our mairie. It was nice to see some shops open, especially florists. There weren’t a whole l...

Sony shows off first combination image sensor and AI chip

Sony has developed an interesting new hybrid technology: An image sensor with AI processing system built into the hardware, making it a single integrated system. The benefits and applications for this are potentially enormous as imagery and code continue to merge. The idea is fairly simple in concept. You take a traditional CMOS image sensor like you’d find in any phone or camera today, and stack it on top of a logic chip that’s built not just for pulling pixels off the sensor but for operati...

These Are All The Things I Love at the Moment

What’s the story morning glory? How’s your day treating you? Is it Monday? Or is it Thursday? I’ve taken to calling everyday “DAY”. There is no Monday, there is no Tuesday, it’s just Day. But today I probably should put a little effort in as it’s Thursday and on Thursday we eat Tacos. Thank god there’s two days with T in them am I right? I am attempting to not burn the house today as I prepare Carne Asada and lime rice because I miss Chipotle like Oliver misses Elio. It’s that “my heart...

IDEAS shared have the power to expand perspectives, change thinking, and move lives. Here are two ideas for the curious mind to engage with: I. When Bread Goes Kawaii: Rainbow Sourdough

Sheltering in place has transformed a nation into a legion of makeshift Betty Crockers. Baking supplies are sold-out on shelves across America. Sourdough starters are being exchanged in back alley hand-offs and in some cases even being distributed via telephone pole  (pro tip: never eat anything you found in a ziplock bag on a San Francisco city street). But what happens when you love bread, but you love psychedelics even more? Oakland-based baker Ashley Shotwell, who is known for her imaginativ...

Integrating Social Media and Community

How do you drive people to the community when they’re so used to participating on social media? This is the headache for many community leaders today. One solution is to completely rethink what your community is. I love some of the examples from retail brands. Take a look at Fenty Beauty’s community page below: ( ) There is no traditional community with questions and answers. Instead, they use social media (notably Instagram) as their hub. Any member of their community can @mention the brand...
