The end of a traditional old Tokyo pickle shop

This shop was very much a part of the old covered shopping street. The buckets of pickles spilled out onto the pedestrian area, and the owner, who always seemed to be open for business, was always working away at something or other. There was the smell too, which was as distinctive as the colours, and noticeable from a considerable distance away. Sadly I have no idea how long it was there for. To interrupt the old fella and bother him with my questions somehow felt wrong. Plus being several t...

Before the Rain

There is 100% chance of rain for the next two days so I got out for some photos while I had the chance. It would be nice to be able to stop here and have a drink. It will be at least sometime in February before that happens. I guess we could all get together for drinks if we wore these. Saw these in a florist just starting to bloom. Cute mosaic dragon on rue du Dragon. It’s not by the famous mosaic artist whose pieces that I’ve been searching for. I see quite a f...

As part of its latest measures, follower counts for some users may change by as many as thousands. The company ha...

Leading Thoughts: Pass Them On

BRITISH statesman Benjamin Disraeli said, “The wisdom of the wise and the experience of ages may be preserved by quotation.” The ideas of others have the power to slow us down and consider perspectives beyond our own. Left alone, our thoughts become too narrow—too vulnerable to blind spots. This learning process may deepen our own thoughts, give us concepts to build on, and start great conversations. It’s also good to know that we are not alone and that others have lived through the same things...

Modern life is rubbish! The people whose homes are portals to the past

What is it like to live in a time machine? Five people explain why they made their home into the perfect replica of an earlier eraWill future generations look at the interior design of the early 21st century in appreciation? Possibly not. We do not appear to have crafted many design classics, unless slab-like corner sofas in mud-grey velvet are Eames chairs in the making. Our feature walls are gaudy; our furniture cheaply made. Scarcely anything seems to be built to last, which is just as well, ...
