Unions blast District Attorney George Gascón’s hiring of controversial prosecutor

Unions representing Los Angeles County prosecutors and law enforcement officers are blasting District Attorney George Gascón’s hiring of controversial Deputy Public Defender Tiffiny Blacknell, a political supporter who has described police officers as “barbarians” and advocated abolishing prisons. Slowly changing old Tokyo streets

Back in September 2016, I took this photo, in a certain way, and at a certain time of the day. Then last week I took another photo in more or less the same spot, but this time in a different way, at a different time of the year, and under considerably different lighting conditions. An exercise that seemed entirely fitting, as the wonderfully arranged streets are themselves now slightly different.

‘Bullet Train’ First Look Photos: Director David Leitch Lets Blood Splatter and Cash Fly

Production is currently underway on the next big action movie from John Wick and Atomic Blonde filmmaker David Leitch. The movie is called Bullet Train, and it features the simple yet promising premise of a group of deadly assassins who all end up on the same train. Since Murder on the Orient Express was already taken, we get the punny title referencing both a high speed train and the ammunition that will undoubtedly be splattering blood on that very train. In fact, you can see some of that blo...

February linkfest

“Trade characters” like Aunt Jemima and the Quaker Oats man used to be much more common in American commerce than they are today, writes logo expert James I. Bowie in Marker. They were so common, in fact, that the US Patent and Trademark Office assigned six-digit codes to trademark applications to “capture personal characteristics, including race and gender, as they were perceived in American culture many decades ago”: There are codes for Native Americans and Asian Pacific people, but not fo...

Leading Thoughts for February 25, 2021

IDEAS shared have the power to expand perspectives, change thinking, and move lives. Here are two ideas for the curious mind to engage with: I. English philosopher John Stuart Mill on the pursuit of happiness: “Those only are happy who have their minds fixed on some object other than their own happiness; on the happiness of others, on the improvement of mankind, even on some art or pursuit, followed not as a means, but as itself an ideal end. Aiming thus at something else, they find happiness...
