From the trade magazines: Op-amp basics, microcontroller measure frequency and period, PCB design accessible for students

Op Amps for Linear Designs: Back to the Basics Op amps are the basic building blocks for much of linear circuit design. You probably learned about them in college and even designed some products containing an op amp.As an electronic engineer, you will at some point in your career probably need to design a linear circuit. If you’re not an advanced linear or analog circuit designer, perhaps the best way to fulfill your linear design needs is to use an op amp. These ICs are widely available, inexp...

Kimono reflections in a crumbling section of Tokyo’s subway system

This fantastically old and crumbling section of Tokyo’s subway system is a firm favourite of mine. It’s patched up beyond belief, there’s piping all over the place, and even if you don’t see them, you can hear rats running around behind the wall panels. Oh, and there’s that bit of protruding rock in the background too. A wonderfully unintended feature that was a key part of another kimono photo I took back in 2018. It’s here if you’d like to see it. Opting to try and incorporate the mirror rathe...

"'Vibe' as slang, referring to an aura or feeling, emerged in the sixties, in California, and gave the word its enduring hippie associations."

Why Molly Baz just might be the Abbie Hoffman of the culinary world

It seems fitting that the title smacks of Abbie Hoffman’s “Steal This Book” because super cheeky “Cook This Book” by Molly Baz is, at times, downright rebellious. The unconventional format. The slangy lingo. The well placed cuss words. A bold “let’s have fun in the kitchen” vibe became the Baz signature on Instagram — she has more than 630,000 followers — and at Bon Appétit magazine where she was a test kitchen star. (She quit in solidarity with colleagues when it was revealed that not all video...

"You've run out of free articles. Try your first month of Slate Plus for just $1..."

Uh, no. I will not do that. Ironically, the article I would have kept reading is "How Berries Became the Juiciest Battle of Kid-Food Instagram/Fun to eat, but paying for them … not so much." This is about parents complaining — or faux-complaining (with cute pictures) — about all the berries their children will eat. Like a whole $4 box in one sitting. I don't know where this story goes, but I'd tell these Instagram ladies to stop giving a little kid the whole box. And stop with the humblebragging...

Anthony Hopkins Gives a Belated Oscars Acceptance Speech, Pays Tribute to Chadwick Boseman

Last night, the 93rd Academy Awards ceremony ended with both a surprise. Although the late Chadwick Boseman had been receiving many posthumous honors throughout awards season for his final performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, the award for Best Actor ended up going to Anthony Hopkins for his turn in The Father. Unfortunately, Hopkins wasn’t even present for the ceremony, virtually or live. But now the Silence of the Lambs star has delivered a belated acceptance speech, paying tribute to Bos...
