2021 Frye Island Races

Hi Everyone, thanks again for attending the FI Road Race 1/5 Mile run walk today. It wasn’t great weather for BBQ, but it was a good day for racing. As you know, the Rec Committee didn’t charge for this year’s race, and we Piloted a race timing system called Korgeo. This software is targeted at races like ours, and is very economical (about a third of the cost of a traditional race timer). The early takeaway is that the software is pretty good, but there are aspects of it I don’t understand, ...

travel in the time of coronavirus

This week, I had a crazy, whirlwind trip to New York City for work — overnight, 15 hours in planes and cars within a 30 hour period. Talk about returning to travel in a baptism by fire! There were parts of those 30 hours that felt surreal: air travel included wiping down seats, and on my flight to New York, the flight attendants were handing out disinfecting wipes as we boarded. Everyone used it to wip...

Wren 6 launch, non-fiction project – Writing Wk25/6 2021

These past 2 weeks Wren 6 launched, and I turned my attention to finally writing my non-fiction book on how I got the Wren books selling. Wren 6 launch The launch of Enemy of the People has been the best I’ve yet had, with nearly 500 pre-orders lining up over the last 6 months. I didn’t do anything else special to promote it, just keep on pushing the whole series at a usual daily ad spend. On that note, Amazon has book 1 in Prime Reading for 3 months and as a Kindle Monthly Deal at 99c in the US...

A unique sunrise.

Here's how it looked at 5:26, 3 minutes after the actual sunrise time:  There seemed to be an impenetrable bank of clouds at the base of the sky. So I was surprised — after my run back to the parking lot and as I was driving home — to look over and see this at 5:44. I stopped at what I call my Secondary Vantage Point, and got this picture:  On reflection, I suppose that what seemed like a fairly uniform cloud cover was much thicker right at the bottom and thinned out just a little higher. This...

Trump allies' new anti-censorship app for conservatives has already been overrun with porn, reports say

A screenshot of GETTR. Apple App Store GETTR, a social media app set up by a former Trump aide, officially launches on July 4. ‘I see people ageing - I don’t always see us’: one family, 30 years, 30 photographs

It was a simple idea: one family, photographed at the same time every year. Zed Nelson has traced Sue and Frank’s transition from new parents to grandparents. What’s it like to see your life pass in front of you?In the summer of 1991, photographer Zed Nelson, then 25, invited a couple of new parents he was acquainted with to visit his London studio. Oh, and bring your baby, he said. At the time he had ambitions to be a travelling photojournalist. Within the year, he would fly out on the first of...
