Leading Thoughts for October 7, 2021

IDEAS shared have the power to expand perspectives, change thinking, and move lives. Here are two ideas for the curious mind to engage with: I. Elon Musk with a counterpoint to the idea to just trust the process: “I don’t believe in process. In fact, when I interview a potential employee and he or she says that ‘it’s all about the process,’ I see that as a bad sign. The problem is that at a lot of big companies, process becomes a substitute for thinking. You’re encouraged to behave like a lit...

Drinks in a dark and dingy Japanese alleyway

After months of continually extended states of emergency that mostly affected the nation’s bar and restaurant industry, restrictions have finally been relaxed, and life is once again a little bit more like it used to be. This may change of course as we head towards autumn, but for now at least, the option of enjoying an evening out is on again, and as my last outside drinks were on Christmas Day in the alleyway below (photos and audio here), it seemed entirely fitting that the first foray of 202...

Revenge Bedtime Procrastination

Anne Helen Petersen wrote about revenge bedtime procrastination, a familiar self-sabotage technique of the iPhone/timeline era. Here is a potentially familiar scene. You are exhausted after working a full day, the sort of day when you felt like your attention was drawn in 20 different directions, where you were ricocheting between obligations and meetings and running six minutes late to pick-up and realizing that if you didn’t put that load of laundry in the wash now, at 9 pm, the rest of the w...

This and That

Just a few things I saw around Paris. These vases are a little too ornate for my taste but I still think they are beautiful. Butter and eggs are no longer sold here. I’m glad they kept the exterior. You can see by the sign on the top that it sells antiques like the two vases. I pass this bookstore quite often but have never seen it open. I stopped for a drink on a rainy day a few days ago. A Spritz cocktail never tastes as good here as it does in Italy. In...

Where does Facebook go from here?

Let’s be really generous to Facebook and assume that 50% of what Frances Haugen just testified to before Congress was misconstrued in some way.Regardless, Facebook will argue their case (as they always do), deny everything (as they always do) and claim that no one really understands them (as they always do). Everyone will view whatever they say with extreme skepticism, and nothing will change.Maybe Facebook doesn’t care. Maybe the possibility of a repeal of their liability protection from...

This is a teenager's brain on Instagram

Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen says Instagram can lead young people down a negative spiral -- one they are ill-equipped to get out of. Experts say that's because the adolescent brain is still developing and the excessive social media use could have long-term consequences. CNN's Clare Sebastian reports.
