Facebook has cracked down on dozens of fake accounts posing as Black supporters for Trump

Facebook took down more than 30 accounts pretending to represent African-American support for President Donald Trump, the company said on Thursday. The accounts were pushed out by a foreign pro-Trump troll farm in Romania and used names such as "BlackPeopleVoteForTrump" and "We Love Our President." Facebook also removed more than 300 other fake accounts linked to conservative media outlet The Epoch Times, which were peddling pro-Trump conspiracy theories about COVID-19 and anti-racism protests...

Instagram’s hashtag searches gave Trump better treatment than Biden

Instagram apparently handled searches for popular hashtags related to the two presidential candidates differently, pointing Joe Biden search queries toward often negative related hashtags while making no such suggestions in corresponding searches pertaining to President Trump. A new report by the Tech Transparency Project details the strange platform behavior. In the report, the tech watchdog compared searches for 20 popular hashtags related to the Trump and Biden campaigns and found that rel...

Instagram Displayed Negative Related Hashtags For Biden, But Hid Them For Trump

An anonymous reader shares a report: For at least the last two months, a key Instagram feature, which algorithmically pushes users toward supposedly related content, has been treating hashtags associated with President Donald Trump and presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden in very different ways. Searches for Biden also return a variety of pro-Trump messages, while searches for Trump-related topics only returned the specific hashtags, like #MAGA or #Trump -- which means searches ...

Microsoft could pay billions for TikTok. It's a tremendously risky move that will put CEO Satya Nadella's strategy to the ultimate test. (MSFT)

On the face of it, Microsoft's decision to explore the possibility of spending billions on a TikTok acquisition seems like a weird business decision.  Under CEO Satya Nadella, Microsoft has doubled down on cloud computing and productivity software, leaving the Xbox console as its last major consumer brand.  TikTok, a mega-popular viral video app with 80 million daily active users in the United States, doesn't seem to tie into that strategy at all.  But Nadella has earned the benefit of the dou...

Facebook, Google, and the US government each have their own reasons to make you believe that TikTok is scary — but they're all self-serving

President Trump and the US government have been considering a ban on TikTok over long-held concerns regarding its ties to China, and its access to user data and influence over content moderation. The threat of a TikTok ban would mean that the app's massive US userbase, estimated to be near 80 million, is up for grabs, and US tech companies are already capitalizing with new apps and formats borrowing from TikTok's viral short-form video format. Concerns over national and data security are level...
