All Synced Photographs

This special collection located in the Catalog panel of Lightroom Classic is very useful for helping us view and manage the photos synced with the cloud-based Lightroom ecosystem, but it can also be an opportunity for self-inflicted injury. Every photo that is synced with the cloud-based Lightroom, whether the photo originated in Lightroom Classic via a synced collection or originated in one of the cloud-based Lightroom apps, will show up in All Synced Photographs. Note, if you impo...

I’ve got the images, stories, behind-the-scenes shots, and even some short videos from my trip out the USS Harry S. Truman last week. Tips for Syncing Lightroom Classic with Lightroom for Mobile

There are a few important, but really easy to miss settings in both Lightroom Classic and Lightroom for mobile that make using them together much more successful. Let’s take a look. Auto Import The first setting I use is located within the Lightroom for mobile app. I’m using it on an iPhone, but this works on both mobile platforms. Within the Lightroom for mobile app I designated one album (collection on Lightroom Classic) to be my “camera roll” that collects all of the photos I take wi...

Controlling Keywords

I don’t often get questions about how to apply keywords to photos, but I do hear from people who are struggling to regain a bit of order over an unruly keyword list. Unfortunately, there is no magic wand to wave and automatically fix a disorganized keyword list, you’ll need to roll up your sleeves, put the kettle on, and just get down to business. Keywording is a manual process, and you need to be prepared to do the heavy lifting. Creating a Hierarchy If you have already assigned keyword...

How to Recover Shadows and Highlights Like a Pro—A Guide to Maximizing Details for Any Photograph Using Aurora HDR

By Richard Harrington We’ve all faced the same problem: photographs that lack contrast; images where the shadows and highlights look flat and the details are muddy. While the problem is common, the solutions are many. In this article, I want to show you several easy fixes (using built-in tools) — including some uncommon ones — that you should explore. We’ll also take a look at Aurora HDR, which works as a plugin to both Lightroom Classic and Photoshop. The Problem You open up...

When Photos Go Missing

An often overlooked aspect of the import process into Lightroom Classic is that the exact location of where to find those photos on your system is written into the catalog file at that time. The path to that location is stored inside the catalog along with all the metadata embedded in each imported photo, and that is what Lightroom uses to find the source photos as you do your work. As long as you use Lightroom to do all file maintenance tasks (such as move, rename, or delete imported photos and...

How I Became a Successful Travel Blogger — My Smartest Decisions

How did I become a successful travel blogger? It sure wasn’t intentional from the start! Back when I started Adventurous Kate in 2010, I had no idea it was even possible to make money with a blog. Recently I read the book Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell, which explains how certain individuals became successful. People tend to believe that genius leads to success — for example, that Bill Gates became successful because he was so smart. But that’s not all of it. Intelligence is a huge factor. So is ...

Lightroom Classic: What You Need To Know About Backing Up to a Secondary Drive

Backing up to a secondary drive on Import? Absolutely. Highly Recommended. However, here’s where people have told me they’ve gotten burned by not really understanding what that means. For example, they imported some images say…three or four months ago. They made collections, edited a bunch of images, added keywords, the whole nine yards. One day their computer’s hard drive crashes (hey, it happens), so they go to their secondary backup drive (the one where they auto-backed up their im...

Beta Release of Adobe DNG Converter 11.2.1

I recently learned that Adobe quietly dropped a beta version of the free DNG converter to help people with newly released cameras (since the last official update in Feb) gain support for their raw photos in Lightroom and Camera Raw. I can’t remember the last time that happened, and I thought it was pretty cool for them to make this available in between official updates. The following cameras are supported by this version of the converter: Canon EOS RPPanasonic LUMIX DC-FZ1000M2 (DC-FZ10002...

Lightroom Tethering Quick Tip

Good Monday, everybody. Here’s one from the vault — it’s a great little tip I picked up from my buddy Terry White, and it’s about having the tethering Heads up display (seen above in the lower third of the image) automatically hide while you’re tethering (you can hide it manually of course, but this tip is how to have it auto-hide). Just press the letter “f” on your keyboard and not only do your tethered images now appear full screen (with all the panels hidden), but your tethering HUD...

Why Sometimes in Lightroom You Can’t Choose a White Balance Preset

This is one I get asked a lot – usually, you go to the White Balance pop-up menu, and you see a list of various white balance presets to choose from (seen below), but sometimes you only get two choices: Auto and Custom. Why can’t you choose a White Balance Preset? Here’s why: ABOVE: White Balance Presets for a RAW image. When you shoot in RAW, the white balance hasn’t been decided yet. It initially shows you the one you had set in the camera, but it’s waiting for you to mak...

That Darn Resolution Field

One of the more persistent questions I get in my inbox, or encounter on any photo-related forum, has to do with the use of the Resolution field on Lightroom Classic’s Export dialog. I want to focus on a specific use scenario where the exported copies are only ever intended to be shared/viewed on screen (not ever printed). Just today I encountered someone posting an answer in response to a question about export settings for a photo that was about to be shared as an email attachment (granted, t...

Solo Female Travel in Paris — Is it Safe?

Is it safe for a woman to travel alone to Paris? Absolutely. Under most circumstances, with the right preparation and precautions, visiting Paris can be as safe as staying in your hometown. Paris is a place where I’ve been traveling alone for years! I first fell in love with Paris when I was 16 years old and on a school trip, and I’ve returned more than a dozen times since, often solo. It’s a city that I love dearly, a city where I frequently play tour guide for my friends and family. However, ...

In Case Your Presets Go Missing

I got a question recently from someone in a panic because they thought all of their presets had disappeared. Well, the presets had disappeared, but only from view and only when certain photos were active (selected) in Develop. Partially Incompatible Presets You see, there was an update back in December of 2018 that brought with it a change in Develop preset behavior when a selected photo was incompatible with some (or all) settings contained in a preset. Let’s say for example you have a...
