It's the time of year to go to Governor Nelson State Park and see the Dutchman's breeches.

"Dutchman's breeches is one of many plants whose seeds are spread by ants, a process called myrmecochory. The ants take the seeds to their nest, where they eat the elaiosomes, and put the seeds in their nest debris, where they are protected until they germinate. They also get the added bonus of growing in a medium made richer by the ant nest debris." "Governor Nelson State Park is a 422-acre Wisconsin state park... on the north shore of Lake Mendota. It is named for former Wisconsin Gov...

Seen Around Paris

Another mix of photos taken around Paris. I went into the Luxembourg Gardens but it was so packed with people that I quickly left. I was looking for some flowering trees but didn’t find any in the short time I was there. A pretty outfit the the window of Repetto, famous for their selection of things for ballet. The levender smelled so good. If I had a terrace I would have bought some. I suspect they wouldn’t thrive indoors. I didn’t need any statues of Mary either but I...

This and That

Another mix of photos in Paris. The full moon came up orange the other day probably due to polution but still beautiful. Here it is right over Montparnasse Tower. Meat delivery. Well, this is unusal. The Dior Shop I think. Seen in a children’s playground by les Halles. Flowers for my birthday. I am old enough to have gotten my second vaccination against Covid on my birthday. I have the antibodies for it too so surely I am covered. I just want to travel aga...

Spring

Like the rest of the world, I am happy when Spring arrives although that doesn’t always mean it will be warmer. I have been out in several nice rather crisp days which I always enjoy. The Tour Saint Jacques looking good against the sky. It was once attached to a church obviously no longer there. The sun shining in the window of this patisserie made these pastries look especially good. I haven’t bought one in years although I do love them. Don’t think this doesn’t mean I don’t eat swe...

Is it finally warm enough to go outside?

I wonder. But inside there is conversation. You start...BACK FROM A HIKE: The temperature got up to 24° and that felt really warm. By the end, I had my hat and mittens off and my jacket unzipped. [Author: [email protected] (Ann Althouse)]

Before the Rain

There is 100% chance of rain for the next two days so I got out for some photos while I had the chance. It would be nice to be able to stop here and have a drink. It will be at least sometime in February before that happens. I guess we could all get together for drinks if we wore these. Saw these in a florist just starting to bloom. Cute mosaic dragon on rue du Dragon. It’s not by the famous mosaic artist whose pieces that I’ve been searching for. I see quite a f...

The Best Thing

It’s really hard to beat the street markets in Paris. I just happened upon this one on the way to some place else. It made me wish I had my cart so I could have taken some of the bounty home. It’s citrus season as you can see. Nice fresh flowers for sale. Turnips I think. This squash makes such good soup. Nuts and dried fruit for sale. I love mushrooms. These people must sell a lot of chickens. Look at all of those being cooked. Here he is pu...

All Saints Day

Usually on All Saints Day, November 1st, I go the Pere Lachaise Cemetery which is an especially lovely place but even more so on November 1st because many people come to visit those who have passed on and to bring flowers, usually mums. Due to the Confinement I missed it this year but on November 9th I made a quick trip up to Montmartre and while there, visited the small local Saint Vincent Cemetery. The leaves were turning. The ivy on the walls looked pretty. I’ve always like...

Ethereal flowers suspended in translucent liquids

Dutch photographer Robert Peek has a new series of flower photos where they are are submerged in milky liquids of varying consistency. The result, as shown with the Kniphofia above, is something vaguely familiar, yet haunting.
