Leica Fable

Oh my lolz. So, Leica's ad agency in Brazil made a short video commercial touting Leica's past (its *distant* past) as the photojournalist's camera of choice*.Said commercial featured photogs running around in sweaty Banana Republic safari apparel, snapping those Decisive Moment shots. The final scene has a photojournalist poking the lens of his Leica R6 at a gap in some hotel room drapes in 1989 Beijing, and the camera zooms in to show the famous Tank Man photo reflected in the business end of h...

This video made China ban the word “Leica” from social media

Earlier this week, a dramatic video titled Leica – The Hunt hit the web, praising all photojournalists and conflict photographers “who lend their eyes to make use see.” However, the video has caused a major backlash in China. The story is set in Beijing in 1989, clearly referring to the Tiananmen Square protests, which are […] The post This video made China ban the word “Leica” from social media appeared first on DIY Photography.

The Proper Attitude Toward Tech (Frank's Lesson)

Michael Kenna, Stone Pine Tunnel, Pento, Abruzzo, Italy, 2016,silver gelatin print, 8 × 7 inches I learned this from Frank DiPerna, one of my teachers at the Corcoran. I must have been having difficulty with something one day, and with a wave of his hand and in a dismissive tone of voice he said, "Just master it. Just learn whatever you need to know to do your work. Don't worry about anything else. Just master what you need." Or maybe he said, "...don't worry about the rest of that crap." (I'm...

Huawei P30 teardown reveals that its camera sensors were all made by Sony

Huawei has recently announced its P30 and P30 Pro phones, aimed to “rewrite the rules of photography.” The four-camera setup of the Pro version offers some impressive features, such as 5x optical zoom, optical image stabilization and excellent low-light capabilities. And while the lenses are co-designed with Leica, a recent teardown has shown that the […] The post Huawei P30 teardown reveals that its camera sensors were all made by Sony appeared first on DIY Photography.

The Art of the Personal Project: Doug Menuez

The Art of the Personal Project is a crucial element to let potential buyers see how you think creatively on your own.  I am drawn to personal projects that have an interesting vision or that show something I have never seen before.  In this thread, I’ll include a link to each personal project with the artist statement so you can see more of the project. Please note: This thread is not affiliated with any company; I’m just featuring projects that I find.  Please DO NOT send me your work.  I do n...

Stepping Out

Last month, I rented a Leica M6 for a weekend. I’d had a nagging sense that I was missing out on something. I’d never shot with a Leica before, and it had been nearly 14 years since I last shot film. It was fun, changing things up—it’s always exciting, trying something new. But I was so happy to discover that it didn’t change how I see or how I shoot. And in the end, although I like the results, I like my Canon 5D Mark IV even more. Sacrilege? Maybe. But it feels good to love the one you’re with...

Real Options

Just musing here. Mulling over the comments about the Range Rover thing, how's this for a concept.... A.) you pay a healthy amount of money for a luxury car, maybe double what you'd pay for a similar mainstream non-luxury version of something similar, b.) you get presented with a list of options, and c.) tick as many boxes as you want, configure your car just the way you like... ...NO CHARGE. That's having options! I predict the first company to do this will make out like bandits. Kia could do i...

11x14" Print

Andrew wrote in the Comments: "Re 'Somewhere out in the barn I have a motion-blurred snapshot of John Gossage in the lovely garden-level dining room of Julie Pratt's mansion holding that print, the first one Robert Frank ever sold.' Dig it out and let's see it!" I tried. I tromped out to the barn and lugged in several boxes of prints, but I didn't find the one I was looking for. Here's another shot from the same NYC trip, though. John Gossage is standing in an art installation on the roof of a ...

Leica Furthers Their Most Accessible Camera With the Leica Q2

Acclaimed high-performance features get an impressive boost Something strange happened to a few of us on staff when the Leica Q was released in 2015: we stopped reaching for smartphones at the first sign of a photogenic moment. The compact Leica Q became our default camera for everything from landscapes and architectural shots to macro details on watches and in cocktails. It enabled better image-capture …

Mirrorless Camera – My Move to the Nikon Mirrorless Camera System

Ever since Sony released their first full-frame mirrorless camera in 2013 I have been wanting to make the switch from DSLR to mirrorless. But I did not want to switch to Sony, for a handful of reasons. Over the years I’ve tried a bunch of mirrorless cameras, both full frame and cropped: Leica M9, Sony A7II, Sony A7R, Fuji XT-1, and the Panasonic GH-5. Due to my dislike of all the mirrorless cameras I tried, I stuck with my Nikon D850 for video and still work. Until the Nikon Z series was rele...

Leica’s Q2 is a beautiful camera that I want and will never have

Leica is a brand I respect and appreciate but don’t support. Or rather, can’t, because I’m not fabulously rich. But if I did have $5,000 to spend on a fixed-lens camera, I’d probably get the new Q2, a significant improvement over 2015’s Q — which tempted me back then. The Q2 keeps much of what made the Q great: a full-frame sensor, a fabulous 28mm F/1.7 Summilux lens, and straightforward operation focused on getting the shot. But it also makes some major changes that make the Q2 a far more co...

Two Catalogs

For those of you who are into film and darkroom, Freestyle's new catalog is out. It's very splashy. For those of you who are into Micro 4/3, the new Micro Four Thirds Joint Lens Catalog is out. The catalog is limited to products offered by companies that formally participate in the 4/3 consortium. There are other lenses available from companies that don't participate but just copy the mount. Leica has more expensive lenses, Canon and Nikon have useful if somewhat scattershot lines, Sony furious...

Sony laughs at tiny E Mount criticisms claiming they can make f/0.63 lenses

Last October, when Leica manager Stephan Schulz was badmouthing Sony’s E Mount, and how it simply couldn’t handle faster lenses due to its small stature, Sony come back not long after they said that they could absolutely do f/1.0 lenses. They just don’t think it’s worth the hassle and that the demand simply isn’t there. Brand Sunsets (and Kodakit)

I wish there were such a thing as "brand sunsets." A sunset provision in public policy, as you might know, is "a measure within a statute, regulation or other law that provides that the law shall cease to have effect after a specific date, unless further legislative action is taken to extend the law." It would be nice if brand names had to be retired after the conditions which earned them their luster in the first place had changed irrevocably for the worse. So many great brand names get dragged...
