Four alternatives to Adobe Lightroom 2019

Adobe recently announced that it would both discontinue downloads of older versions of Creative Cloud apps (which includes Lightroom and Photoshop), and revoke the license for older software. Further, Adobe tweeted that consumers “may face potential claims of infringement by third parties.” For some photographers, the thought of continuing to use Adobe’s subscription-based products is unpalatable, and fortunately, there […] The post Four alternatives to Adobe Lightroom 2019 appeared first on DIY...

How to Use Lightroom’s New Texture Slider (and why it’s so awesome)

I saw a post this week in my feed and it noted that the Texture Slider was the first new slider added to Lightroom in four years (I guess the last slider added was the Dehaze slider). Of course, there’s been a ton of new features added since then, but as far as sliders go, I think they might be right. Well, thankfully, this new slider has been worth the wait. I also ran across this excellent post from Adobe’s own Julieanne Kost, and I wanted to share it here because (a) Julianne’s aweso...

Lightroom Update brings new “Texture” slider, in-app education and batch processing for Android

Every few years, Adobe adds something new and interesting to their raw file engine. We saw it when they added the Clarity slider, when we lost “Fill Light” and “Recovery” in favour of shadows, highlights and white levels. And we saw it fairly recently when they introduced Dehaze. Now, they’ve added a new “Texture” slider, […] The post Lightroom Update brings new “Texture” slider, in-app education and batch processing for Android appeared first on DIY Photography.

May 2019 Update for Lightroom Classic, Lightroom, and Adobe Camera Raw

Today, Adobe has released an update for the Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw family of applications. Before getting into the new features that have been added, it is important to note that Adobe has dropped the “CC” from the names of Lightroom Classic CC and Lightroom CC. This is because all versions of Lightroom are now only available via a Creative Cloud subscription, so there is no need to differentiate the CC version from the perpetual license version. One could make the case that having the “...

Adobe Renames Lightroom Again

Adobe has done it again. Adobe renamed Lightroom Again. First Adobe renamed Lightroom to Lightroom Classic CC. Then they released a “light” version of Lightroom and called it Lightroom CC (instead of Lightroom Elements). Now, almost two years later, Adobe is renaming Lightroom Classic CC to Lightroom Classic. Turns out, since recording this rant/video, Adobe also decided to change the name of Lightroom CC to just Lightroom. Which makes a complete 360, since the original name of Lightroom Clas...

All Synced Photographs

This special collection located in the Catalog panel of Lightroom Classic is very useful for helping us view and manage the photos synced with the cloud-based Lightroom ecosystem, but it can also be an opportunity for self-inflicted injury. Every photo that is synced with the cloud-based Lightroom, whether the photo originated in Lightroom Classic via a synced collection or originated in one of the cloud-based Lightroom apps, will show up in All Synced Photographs. Note, if you impo...

Tips for Syncing Lightroom Classic with Lightroom for Mobile

There are a few important, but really easy to miss settings in both Lightroom Classic and Lightroom for mobile that make using them together much more successful. Let’s take a look. Auto Import The first setting I use is located within the Lightroom for mobile app. I’m using it on an iPhone, but this works on both mobile platforms. Within the Lightroom for mobile app I designated one album (collection on Lightroom Classic) to be my “camera roll” that collects all of the photos I take wi...

Beta Release of Adobe DNG Converter 11.2.1

I recently learned that Adobe quietly dropped a beta version of the free DNG converter to help people with newly released cameras (since the last official update in Feb) gain support for their raw photos in Lightroom and Camera Raw. I can’t remember the last time that happened, and I thought it was pretty cool for them to make this available in between official updates. The following cameras are supported by this version of the converter: Canon EOS RPPanasonic LUMIX DC-FZ1000M2 (DC-FZ10002...

Why Sometimes in Lightroom You Can’t Choose a White Balance Preset

This is one I get asked a lot – usually, you go to the White Balance pop-up menu, and you see a list of various white balance presets to choose from (seen below), but sometimes you only get two choices: Auto and Custom. Why can’t you choose a White Balance Preset? Here’s why: ABOVE: White Balance Presets for a RAW image. When you shoot in RAW, the white balance hasn’t been decided yet. It initially shows you the one you had set in the camera, but it’s waiting for you to mak...

February Update for Lightroom Classic and Lightroom CC

Adobe has just released the first update to Lightroom Classic, Lightroom CC, and Adobe Camera Raw for 2019. How to Use Lightroom CC On Mobile

Friday is here — let’s start it off right with a video from our friend and Adobe Worldwide Evangelist, Terry White, and in this video Terry shows you how to use Lightroom CC on your mobile device to edit anywhere. This is really good stuff, and Terry cuts to the chase in this video (it’s only 20-minutes, and you’re up and running on mobile). He answers lots of important questions, and as always Terry is so fun and informative. Yesterday we kicked off our annual 12-Days of Christmas freebies!...

Adobe Photoshop

Recently I've been trying new photo editors. There are a lot of them out there at this point; the popular one is Lightroom from Adobe. It's the standard, if there is a standard. It's now cloud-based and is called Lightroom CC. I tried it when it came out and didn't like the interface. It doesn't think like I think. I've never owned it or used it. You tend to stick with what you're used to. I've been using Adobe Photoshop (PS) since 1994, and Adobe Bridge. As you might know, photo processing in P...

Photo[shop]-Specific Computers

I'm far from a computer expert, so take this with the appropriate chunk of salt. I'm just reading and reporting back. A friend sent me this interesting short article about picking a computer for Photoshop and Lightroom. It's a product description page for a photo-specific computer built by a PC fabricator. It's on Punch and it's called "What kind of processor do I need for Adobe Photoshop CC and Lightroom CC in 2018?" It starts with a brief description of cores and threads, then moves on to cloc...

Fixing Family Photos in Lightroom Classic

The objects we’re most likely to grab on the way out of a burning building are our family photos. Here are some tips to help you get the most out of Lightroom when trying to make some corrections to the most common issues you’ll encounter with older digital photos. Our favorite and most cherished photos may not be the best ones we’ve ever taken, but rather those where the moment or the people captured within them are more important than camera settings. As I look back through thousands of my fam...

The Best New Photographers’ Features From Adobe’s October 2018 Update

One of the most important benefits of Adobe’s move to a subscription service is that it has allowed them to update their photographer’s tools more frequently. Rather than one big update through a 2-4 year cycle, these days we get a couple of small updates and one large update per year.   This year has been no exception and at the Adobe Max conference in LA, some interesting and very useful additions were made to the programs in the photographer’s package, namely Photoshop, Lightroom CC and Ligh...

Here Is An Easy Workflow To Get Your Best Images From Lightroom Up On Instagram

Here’s a shocker. You know those amazing landscapes, portraits, and others that top up on your Instagram timeline? Many of them were not shot on smartphones. In fact, the closest many of them got to a smartphone is when they were uploaded to Instagram.   Why should you post images from your main cameras to an app designed for mobile photography? Firstly because most photographers do. Instagram has become a recognized way for photographers to market their images and abilities. It's a platform wh...
