Free car washes rock as this New Zealand band cleans up in Southern California

David Dubinsky recently found an unusual flyer in the mailbox of his Hollywood Hills home. It came from the indie rock band Emperors Night, but it didn’t advertise any sort of upcoming concert. Instead, it offered a free car wash in exchange for a follow on the band’s Instagram account. A few days after the entertainment lawyer messaged the band and determined they were legit, 32-year-old Anand, 31-year-old Bud and 28-year-old Dhyan Chalmers, the New Zealand-born brothers who make up the indie p...

Gwen Stefani drops new single ‘Slow Clap’ after teasing fans with cowgirl getup

She’s engaged to country superstar and fellow “The Voice” coach Blake Shelton, but Gwen Stefani still hasn’t “gone country.” At least musically. The 51-year-old No Doubt frontwoman has been teasing fans on social media with photos of her donning a lot of silver fringe, bedazzled cutoffs and a shimmery cowboy hat. The look has been stirring up fans with anticipation. Instagram user jenlovesgwen posted “Queen you look amazing OMG,” while kirstyn_blaked commented “Not ready if it’s country. Bring b...

Grand Park celebrates Valentine’s Day with two weeks of romantic reggae

Grand Park is taking love online this year with a celebration in honor of Valentine’s Day driven by the sounds of lovers rock. The annual Grand Park’s Lovers Rock celebration, which is usually a live event held at the downtown L.A. park on Valentine’s Day celebrating the romantic subgenre within reggae, will instead be online this year from Feb.12-28 because of the pandemic. So instead of DJs playing sets of romantic reggae tunes near the park’s Arthur J. Will Memorial Fountain, it will consist ...

Chain Reaction, Anaheim’s all-ages concert venue, announces plans to close as supporters rally to save it

Anaheim’s all-ages club Chain Reaction announced that it would be officially closing its doors after being unable to host live music for the last seven months due to the coronavirus pandemic. According to a post on the venue’s official Facebook and Instagram pages Friday morning, Chain Reaction decided to close indefinitely. These teen rockers will perform from a truck to help save live music venues

Things were progressing for South Bay teen rockers X Wire prior to the pandemic. Before a name change from Live Wire to X Wire, the band was doing what countless others have done to make it in the music industry — playing every gig they could get at any venue that would give them a shot. They played at venues such as The Canyon Club in Agoura Hills and a few restaurants and breweries with stages around the South Bay. But that all came to a sudden halt when the novel coronavirus pandemic hit and ...

Orange County-based Burger Records shuts down amid sexual misconduct allegations

Earlier this week, Fullerton-based indie record label Burger Records, which is known for its Burgerama indie pop and garage rock festivals, announced it was shutting down following allegations of sexual misconduct and cultivating a culture of toxic masculinity. On Monday, the label released a statement apologizing for the “pain suffered at the hands of a toxic male music culture that does not value women as equals.” Originally, the label announced in the statement that its co-founder Lee Rickard...

Long Beach’s 4th & Orange is looking beyond the city limits for fame

It’s a tight fit for the 4th & Orange inside the Dubshack, a home recording studio the members built out of a tiny garage in the backyard of a gray two-story home on a quiet Lakewood residential neighborhood. But from this small space where a set of drums almost blocks the front door, the band has released a few songs that have amassed millions of views on YouTube. And in the short year they’ve been together, the five-piece reggae-rock group 4th & Orange, named after the Long Beach corner where ...

Stagecoach 2019: 7 ways the festival is different from Coachella

Hidden disco club Hush Hush versus the Budweiser Country Club. Neon patterned shirts versus cowboy boots. Standing room only versus a sea of lawn chairs. While the second weekend of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and the Stagecoach Country Music Festival happen a week apart from one another on the Empire Polo Club grounds in Indio, the settings and experiences are very different. Here are some of the notable ways the two festivals differ (and some ways they’re the same). The layout...

Coachella 2019: How the festival survived and thrived to reach its 20th year

As the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival marks its 20th anniversary this weekend, it’s easy to forget what a rare and unexpected surprise the very first fest was in 1999. First of all, most of you weren’t there – only 20,000 or so fans “filled” the Empire Polo Field to hear artists such as the Chemical Brothers and Beck, Rage Against the Machine and Tool. Second, those few who were there had never seen anything like it. Crisp green grass instead of asphalt or dirt. Reasonable prices at the ...

Tailgate Fest, a country music event devoted to letting fans listen to headliner artists from the comfort of their cars, won’t be coming to Norco’s SilverLakes Equestrian and Sports Park this summer as previously announced. Burning Man tickets are about to go on sale – with a few new tweaks

Another springtime, another stampede of the masses to score tickets to this summer’s annual Burning Man. Registration for tickets started yesterday, ends Friday, and the tickets go on sale Wednesday, April 10. This year’s celebration of all things creative and communal (“Life is short. Rose Parade 2019: Bands from around the globe ready to march down Colorado Boulevard

Community service and helping others are hallmarks of many of the bands performing in the Rose Parade. Perhaps that’s best illustrated by the students from two communities (Mercer Island, Wash., and Pickerington, Ohio) who reached out to Banda Escolar de Guayanilla in Puerto Rico. In 2017, about two weeks after all three bands were selected for the 2019 Rose Parade, the island nation was devastated by back-to-back category 5 hurricanes. “A lot of families were having to decide whether they wante...

Dierks Bentley talks mountain music, ice baths and headlining the Hollywood Bowl for the first time

For well over a decade Arizona-born country singer-songwriter Dierks Bentley has had his eye on playing the iconic Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. Arroyo Seco Weekend 2018: Everything that happened on Saturday

The weather was pretty much perfect for the first day of Arroyo Seco Weekend at Brookside at the Rose Bowl. There was a cool breeze, sunshine and the new configuration of the grounds gave people a lot more elbow room than last year. But one of the coolest aspects of Arroyo Seco is that the thing that defines it isn’t just the music or the audience, but the sense of place. Pasadena has its thumbprints all over the fest. The festival itself is eclectic in the best way possible. There are little li...
