Forget Ariana Grande, Childish Gambino and the hordes of celebrities — there is no bigger star than “Overview Effect” at this weekend’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Arroyo Seco Weekend 2018: Everything that happened on Saturday

The weather was pretty much perfect for the first day of Arroyo Seco Weekend at Brookside at the Rose Bowl. There was a cool breeze, sunshine and the new configuration of the grounds gave people a lot more elbow room than last year. But one of the coolest aspects of Arroyo Seco is that the thing that defines it isn’t just the music or the audience, but the sense of place. Pasadena has its thumbprints all over the fest. The festival itself is eclectic in the best way possible. There are little li...

Instagrammable music festivals

How did we show people we were at a music festival before Instagram? Ah, well, Facebook. And before that? As far as my memory goes, we just took pictures with our analogic cameras, developed them, and stick it on the walls of our room, hoping visitors would notice them. We could also buy the festival’s official t-shirt. Or call our best friends who couldn’t make it in the middle of their favorite song as a way of saying I wish you were here (sound was so bad our friend had no idea what they we...

Music Festivals: Your Phone’s Worst Enemy?

A slow smartphone at a music festival is like a hurricane on a cruise ship: absolutely horrible. And with the summer festival season underway, a slow phone means less uploading photos to Instagram and Snapchat, less communicating with friends after inevitably getting separated and much more dealing with unnecessary frustration. Fortunately, festivalgoers don’t need an extensive arsenal of weather-gauging and forecasting equipment to bypass the issue; they only need the right applications and the...
