Yesterday at Devil's Lake.

All 3 photos taken at about 3 in the afternoon in Devil's Lake State Park. I took the first 2, and the third one, showing me, was taken by Meade. Talk about anything you want in the comments. [Author: [email protected] (Ann Althouse)]

Sunrise — 7:15, 7:11.

I arrived on the scene at 7:11 and waited for what I called "the dot":  There it is, our dot, our orb — the star of the show, the whole show, life on Earth.  That's not me admiring the sun. I was taking that photograph. But 4 minutes earlier, pre-dot, it was me in the photograph, greeting the photographer, Meade: [Author: [email protected] (Ann Althouse)]

At the Sunrise Café...

... you can talk about whatever you want. And here are some phases of today's interesting sunrise.  The pale edge of the sun first appeared a little way up from the shoreline, as if there was a phantom horizon: It heated up nicely:  And, from a distance, Meade took a picture of me taking a picture. Alliums still peaking.

And here's a photo by Meade, showing, along with the alliums, the square of wheat field that's in the process of distinguishing itself from the lawn:  [Author: [email protected] (Ann Althouse)]

Scarlet elf cups.

"Sarcoscypha coccinea, commonly known as the scarlet elf cup, scarlet elf cap, or the scarlet cup, is a species of fungus in the family Sarcoscyphaceae of the order Pezizales."    We found them today in Blue Mound State Park, where we walked my favorite trail, the Over Lode. AND: Here's the photo Meade took of me:  [Author: [email protected] (Ann Althouse)]

We took a walk in the Arboretum today.

At the Sunrise Café...

... you can talk all night.  That's a photo by Meade, and if you look closely, you can see me out there on the Lake Mendota ice. Here's the picture of the sunrise I was taking: [Author: [email protected] (Ann Althouse)]

I finally made it out to see the sunrise once again.

Had not made it out since February 2. Just too cold! And I only need it to be feels-like 9° to be willing to do it. I've done these sunrise runs since September 2019, and — not counting when we were out of town — I'd only ever missed an occasional day, maybe 2 days once or twice. I think I've missed more days this February than in all the other time combined. Ah, well! I was happy to get out.  [Author: [email protected] (Ann Althouse)]

At the Sunrise Café...

... you can talk all night. And here's a picture of me on my 70th birthday, ice skating: Photo by Meade. And thanks to all who wished me a happy birthday. [Author: [email protected] (Ann Althouse)]

At the Trout Lily Café...

... you can talk about whatever you like.I was so pleased to see the wildflowers back in my favorite woods! The trout lilies have decided to grow in a way that we humans see as upside down. Meade got the idea to get underneath and photograph the flower from our idea of the front side (which let sky shine through): [Author: [email protected] (Ann Althouse)]

Sunrise Althouse.

ADDED: The lighting there is adjusted to pull me out of the shadow. You can see the color of the sunrise as it really appeared in the iPhone screen I'm holding. Here's the picture I was taking: AND: Here's Meade's photograph, adjusted to show the sunrise and leave me in the shadow: [Author: [email protected] (Ann Althouse)]

The sunrise run. Actual sunrise time, 6:57.

Meade takes a picture of me at 7:08... At 6:53, we heard the trumpeter swans off to the west of the beach, and I stopped to take a photo and somehow caused them to stop trumpeting (or I would be showing you video of this)... At 7:06, the fog and the reflection in the lake got me to stop again... [Author: [email protected] (Ann Althouse)]

The parsley harvest.

Your daily Mendota.

It's a 4-day streak now. Different every day. Not that different. But I'm keeping an eye on it for you. MEANWHILE: Meade was mountain biking and texted me this: [Author: [email protected] (Ann Althouse)]

At the Sunday café...

... just a few pictures from yesterday in the Arboretum... That one's from Meade, as I was walking away. Later, we got caught together in a reflection... I took that one — of an odd spike of the artificial in what was mostly trees... ... and flowers... ... at their prettiest. [Author: [email protected] (Ann Althouse)]
