With coronavirus-prompted distance learning, teens cope with social isolation, new stressors

A cluster of friends high-fived and chatted at the entrance to Reseda Charter High on Wednesday morning, standing rather close to one another at a time when public health officials caution against breaching 6 feet with anyone outside your household. They stood in a line that snaked around the block to pick up school-issued laptops for remote instruction. It’s been nearly two weeks since schools in Southern California and across the nation shuttered, hoping to hamper spread of the coronavirus pan...

Cecil Castellucci talks surprising resurrection of Plain Janes, her graphic novels about artful teen girls

In 2007, DC Comics’ teen girl-centric imprint Minx published the graphic novel “The Plain Janes” by Cecil Castellucci and artist Jim Rugg; the story concerned high school students who make art installations covertly around their small town. While a sequel hit shelves a year later, Minx ultimately folded and the series was left incomplete. That is, until now: Little, Brown Young Readers just released an omnibus edition last month, including the first two tales and one new one, “Janes Attack Back....

Lakers game against Clippers Tuesday is postponed

When it happens, it’ll go down among the most meaningful games in Staples Center history. And, at the same time, relatively meaningless. But for now, the NBA announced Monday afternoon that it was postponing Tuesday’s game between the Lakers and Clippers, to be rescheduled at a later date. “The decision was made out of respect for the Lakers organization, which is deeply grieving the tragic loss of Lakers legend Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna and seven other people in a helicopter crash Sunday...

Lakers, Clippers will weather emotional night when they meet Tuesday

It’ll go down among the most meaningful games in Staples Center history. And, at the same time, relatively meaningless. They’ll play the game in “the house that Kobe Bryant built,” as Alicia Keys put it in her address as host of the Grammy Awards, the music awards show that was held at Staples Center, ...

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope shakes off bumpy start, finds perfect fit with Lakers

PHILADELPHIA — It was meant to be a putback. An easy shot. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope threw the ball back up toward the rim almost as quickly as he collected the rebound. Then, his heart sank as the ball stuck between the rim and the backboard – an unlikely result that added to his run of misfortune whenever he tried to do something that’s come naturally for so much of his life: score. This was not the plan. Feeling a special season ahead, Caldwell-Pope devoted more time than ever this offseason t...

LOS ANGELES — When it comes to LeBron James, nothing might be more precious than time. His 35th birthday was mere hours away after a Sunday victory over the Dallas Mavericks. Don’t count me out just yet.” Sure enough, on Monday morning, James celebrated his 35th year by posting Instagram videos from the L...

Kartje: Josh Rosen’s classy exit, David Gettleman’s folly and other NFL draft musings

His name loomed over the entire NFL draft, for reasons which, like most matters regarding Josh Rosen, were not of his own volition. Just one year after the Cardinals traded up to choose him in the first round, just weeks after reiterating that he was still “the guy” in Arizona, the Cardinals used the No. 1 overall pick on his replacement. They plastered the team Instagram account with photos of their new quarterback, Kyler Murray, then edited Rosen out of their hype videos. It was not subtle. Th...
