Sunrise, 6:30 a.m.

Actual sunrise time, 6:24. It will be much later tomorrow, with Daylight Savings beginning tonight. Having awoken before 4 the last few mornings, I am ready for the clock to spring forward to where I already am. [Author: [email protected] (Ann Althouse)]

Suddenly, as I'm working at my desk, tweaking this morning's sunrise photograph, a beautiful snowstorm sweeps in.

We don't often get those picturesque big, fluffy flakes, and I'm delighted to see it all from my window. I would have loved to have it falling on me as I went out on my sunrise run, but the sun and I were too early for it: [Author: [email protected] (Ann Althouse)]

Temperature 15°, wind gusts up to 33 mph — a good opportunity to test the meaning of the notion of the "feels like" temperature...

... which was -5°.Answer: My face got quite cold, but I've been in actual -5° cold, and I wouldn't say it felt that cold as the wind was gusting, but I did wish I'd brought a scarf to cover my cheeks and nose. The rest of me was just fine, even a bit hot. Side issue: Running around trees in the wind is dangerous. I saw one downed branch, and I heard some creaking. You really can get killed out there in the wind. ADDED: So what is the wind speed that should make you decide against being out aro...

Sunrise at 7:07 (actual sunrise time today, 7:01).

This morning, stepping onto my path, I startled an owl that had perched nearby, about to feast on a mouse (or was it a vole?). He swooped down and flew across my path — with that rodent draped from its beak — and up into the woods — in search, no doubt, of a more private breakfast nook. At the New Snow Café...

... talk about whatever you like. Photo taken at 7:23 this morning. Actual sunrise time was 7:05. The day to day change in the sunrise time is getting much bigger. The sunlight period is increasing by more than 2 and a half minutes a day —  [Author: [email protected] (Ann Althouse)]

The Passion Of Trees In Pictures By Iranian Photographer Ali Shokri

To me, each tree, like a human-being, has a tale to tell. When a tree dies, a whole story is interrupted, a destiny is altered for the worse. I feel as if the trees, bundled at the back of trucks, are cursing us with their broken hands, wounded faces, and severed roots. Perhaps this is how we are led towards damnation, little by little stripped of our humanity, when man’s “abounding foliage... Source

Absolutely magnificent black-and-white photos of trees in the fog

These are just a small sample of Michael Schlegel's glorious photographs of trees in Fanal, the laurisilva forest of Madeira, Portugal. The otherworldly images reassure me with their quiet calm. (via Kottke)

The Big Oak...

... is not that tall, but it has amazing horizontality. It got that way by growing up without crowding from other trees. Nowadays, people make a point of removing any trees that would crowd it. It won the horizontality game on its own long ago, but we the people of today like what it did and want to preserve it for our gratification. [Author: [email protected] (Ann Althouse)]

At the Last of the Fall Color Café...

... you can talk about whatever you want. The photo documents my chance encounter with fall color this morning.AND: Here's a quote I ran across in my reading the other day:There are certain queer times and occasions in this strange mixed affair we call life when a man takes this whole universe for a vast practical joke, though the wit thereof he but dimly discerns, and more than suspects that the joke is at nobody's expense but his own. However, nothing dispirits, and nothing seems worth while ...
