Democrat Warren enters 2020 White House race

Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren -- an outspoken critic of Wall Street and nemesis of Donald Trump -- entered the 2020 race for the White House on Monday. The 69-year-old progressive announced she was launching an exploratory committee for president, becoming the first major candidate in what is set to be an extraordinarily crowded Democratic primary, united by a singular focus on unseating the Republican Trump. Detaining immigrants is big business

Here's who is getting rich off Trump's immigrant detention camps. A new Daily Beast investigation reveals new details about just how lucrative the business of detaining immigrant asylum-seekers in the United States has become. “In 2018 alone, for-profit immigration detention was a nearly $1 billion industry underwritten by taxpayers and beset by problems that include suicide, minimal oversight, and what immigration advocates say uncomfortably resembles slave labor,” write the Beast's Spence...

Donald Trump complains about criticism of Syria withdrawal as Graham says it is on 'pause'

President Donald Trump has declared that US troops will stay in Syria to fight Isis "remnants", apparently backtracking on his promise of hasty withdrawal. The president, cooped up in the White House on New Year’s Eve while his wife Melania rang in the new year at Mar-a-Lago without him, issued a volley of tweets yesterday defending the drawdown. In noticeably more measured language, however, he said that the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (Isil) was “mostly” defeated – he had previously d...

Elizabeth Warren’s 2020 presidential chances, broken down

If Democratic voters are looking for the kind of candidacy Bernie Sanders was selling in 2016, Warren has about as good a claim on it as Sanders does. Things that could hurt her: her age, that DNA test and a lingering awkwardness with black voters.

Alone at White House, Trump Laments Bad Press on Syria

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump complained on Monday that he’s getting “bad press” for his decision to pull American troops out of Syria, saying he’s making good on his campaign promise against U.S. involvement in “never ending wars.” Earlier this month, Trump abruptly announced on Twitter that he was withdrawing 2,000 U.S. troops from Syria. He said Islamic State militants are “mostly gone” and he’s “slowly” sending American servicemen and women back to their families. A drawdown of tr...

WASHINGTON (AP) — Despite public equivocations by three confidants, President Donald Trump is insisting he wants to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. “An all concrete Wall was NEVER ABANDONED,” tweeted Trump, whose demand for congressional funding to construct one has caused a budgetary standoff. “Some areas will be all concrete but the experts at Border Patrol prefer a Wall that is see through (thereby making it possible to see what is happening on both sides).” Trump’s comments on M...

Is it news that Trump's wall is not a wall made out of concrete?

The concrete border wall that President Trump has repeatedly called for as a signature campaign promise...What? Trump has been repeatedly calling for a "concrete" wall? I thought he'd been saying all along that it needs to be see-through and couldn't be a solidly opaque wall. The word "concrete" is ambiguous. Is the NYT using it to mean the opposite of "abstract...

US judge says Obamacare can stand while appeal is heard

A US judge who ruled earlier this month that Obamacare is unconstitutional has said the health care law can stand while his decision is appealed. Opposition Democrats, who have seen the law survive previous legal and legislative attacks, view it as a signature achievement of former president Barack Obama. Republicans on the other hand dismiss it as governmental overreach and President Donald Trump made repealing the law a key part of his campaign platform.
