Weirdo O’Rourke

Friends of the young Bill Clinton and Barack Obama spoke of the special glow of promise they had about them, even back in their early twenties. Angels sat on their shoulders. History gave them a wink and said, “Hey, good lookin’, I’ll be back to pick you up later.”Robert O’Rourke? Not so much. He was just a weirdo. That isn’t my word, it’s how his friends saw him. “You’re supposed to make friends with future secretaries of state, not weirdo musicians,” one O’Rourke pal, Adam Mortimer, told the N...

Sasse Backs Trump’s Emergency Declaration Despite Executive-Overreach Concern

Senator Ben Sasse (R., Neb.) on Thursday voted against a resolution condemning President Trump's national-emergency declaration despite his repeated insistence that the declaration usurped Congress's constitutional authority. In a statement explaining his decision to oppose the resolution, Sasse acknowledged that in its current form the National Emergencies Act of 1976 was "overly broad" and said that, while he would like to reform the law, Trump's emergency declaration does not viola...

In the Woke War against Beto, Root for Beto

Earlier this morning, Robert “Beto” O’Rourke announced that he’s running for president, and there are two things I believe with equal intensity. First, I don’t want Beto to be president. He’s a culturally left economic progressive who may be the serious candidate closest to an actual open-borders position on immigration. Second, I don’t want to see the Democratic party become so radical — and so obsessed with matters of race and privilege — that even Beto is too “moderate” to win.So, in the woke...

GOP Senators Interrupt Trump’s Family Dinner To Change His Mind On Emergency

Sens. Ted Cruz (R-TX), Ben Sasse (R-NE) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) busted in on President Donald Trump’s family dinner in his private residence Wednesday night to craft a last-minute out for Trump as a bicameral rebuke on his national emergency declaration becomes more and more likely. According to a Thursday Washington Post report, they pushed an 11th hour proposal to give senators a way to vote for the emergency declaration and also take a stand on what is being perceived as presidential ove...

The Emerging Democratic Minority

The biases of the media are so pervasive that there is little recognition of the steady disintegration of the Democrats, though it is occurring every day. Rational and intelligent members of the center-Left write to me every week with new concerns about where the Left is going. The Democratic National Committee’s decision not to allow Fox News to put on one of their candidates’ debates confirms the weakness of the party and of its leaders. The process of atomizing society into smaller and smalle...

Trump Breaks Precedent As President With His 2020 Dem Challengers Punditry

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Kamala Harris had the best campaign roll-out. Amy Klobuchar’s snowy debut showed grit. Elizabeth Warren’s opening campaign video was a bit odd. Take it from an unlikely armchair pundit sizing up the 2020 Democratic field: President Donald Trump. In tweets, public remarks and private conversations, Trump is making clear he is closely following the campaign to challenge him on the ballot. Facing no serious primary opponent of his own — at least so far — Trump is esta...

US lawmakers reach tentative deal to avoid government shutdown

US congressional negotiators said late on Monday they had reached a tentative deal on border security funding that would avert another partial government shutdown due to start on Saturday, but provided no details. "We reached an agreement in principle" on funding border security programs through Sept. 30, Republican Senator Richard Shelby told reporters. "Our staffs are going to be working feverishly to put all the particulars together,” Shelby said. He did not say whether President Donald Trump...

Trump Campaign Takes Sweeping Steps To Prevent 2020 Primary Challenge

WASHINGTON (AP) — Worried about a potential Republican primary challenge, President Donald Trump’s campaign has launched a state-by-state effort to prevent an intraparty fight that could spill over into the general-election campaign. The nascent initiative has been an intense focus in recent weeks and includes taking steps to change state party rules, crowd out potential rivals and quell any early signs of opposition that could embarrass the president. It is an acknowledgment that Trump, who ...

Elliott Broidy Files New Lawsuit Alleging Vast Qatari Conspiracy

Disgraced GOP fundraiser Elliott Broidy filed a new lawsuit against his alleged Qatari-backed tormentors in D.C. federal court today, one month after a Manhattan federal judge dismissed a similar complaint. Broidy is suing GOP operative Nicolas Muzin, businessman Joey Allaham, and Mercury Public Affairs media strategist Gregory Howard, alleging that the trio – along with lobbying firm Stonington Strategies – took millions of dollars from the Qatari government to extort and defame him after ha...

2020: Year of the Democrats? Maybe Not

Obama in the Rose Garden with Crying Joe Biden U.S.A. –-(Ammoland.com)- If Democrats are optimistic as 2019 begins, it is understandable. Their victory on Nov. 6, adding 40 seats and taking control of the House of Representatives, was impressive. And with the party's total vote far exceeding the GOP total, in places it became a rout. In the six New England states, Republicans no longer hold a single House seat. Susan Collins of Maine is the last GOP senator. In California, Democrats took the ...

O’Rourke’s liberal credentials questioned as he eyes 2020

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — During this year’s Texas Senate race, some home-state Democrats grumbled that Beto O’Rourke wasn’t softening his liberal positions enough to finish a near-upset of Ted Cruz. Now, as the outgoing congressman mulls a 2020 White House run, a small but vocal segment of activists is suggesting he’s not liberal enough, arguing […]

After rejection of contentious proposed amendments, FIRST STEP Act passed by Senate by vote of 87 to 12!!!!

In this post back in August I wondered "Could enhanced FIRST STEP Act get more than 90 votes in the Senate if even brought up for a vote?".  Well, it seems I was off by three votes, as tonight the the US Senate voted 87 to 12 to enact the FIRST STEP Act.  With a vote in the House scheduled for later this week, this bill should be on Prez Trump's  desk before the end of this week and law before Prez Trump heads down to Mar-a-Lago for the holidays.  This USA Today article, headlined "Senate passes...

How The IRS Was Gutted

An eight-year campaign to slash the agency’s budget has left it understaffed, hamstrung and operating with archaic equipment. The result: billions less to fund the government. That’s good news for corporations and the wealthy. In the summer of 2008, William Pfeil made a startling discovery: Hundreds of foreign companies that operated in the U.S. weren’t paying U.S. taxes, and his employer, the Internal Revenue Service, had no idea. Under U.S. law, companies that do business in the Gulf of Me...

Senator Ted Cruz supports FIRST STEP Act with revisions, Prez Trump tweets for a "VOTE," and the bill's prospects brighten

The US stock market probably can lay claim to being the most volatile and unpredictable metric since last months election, but the ups and downs surrounding the possible enactment of the FIRST STEP Act during the lame duck Congress have certainly been knocking me for a loop.  As of yesterday evening, as reflected in this post, I was ready to put a folk in reform efforts and conclude they were done for now.  But a new day brings all sorts of new developments: (1) Senator Ted Cruz issued this pres...

CNN On What House Democrats Can Do About Guns

CNN: Deutch said implementing universal background checks, a “gun violence restraining order,” which allows law enforcement to ask a judge to temporarily take guns away from people who are deemed a threat, and banning so-called “bump stocks,” are at the top of his list, along with other school safety and mental health initiatives. With Democrats in control of the House, they can also hold hearings on gun violence, which they tried to pressure Judiciary Committee chairman Bob Goodlatte, the Repub...

Acosta accosted by Trump, but he’s no martyr

Well, that happened. And happened and kept happening. Last week was a doozie even by today’s speed-of-Trump news cycles. The midterms have come and gone and the President claimed victory despite losing the House of Representatives. CNN’s Jim Acosta got his White House press credentials pulled after once again failing to understand the difference been journalism and commentary. Close Texas loss may not dim O’Rourke’s political star

EL PASO, Texas (AP) — Beto O’Rourke didn’t sound like someone giving a farewell speech after losing a Senate race in deep-red Texas by less than 3 points. If anything, the Democrat’s concession to Republican Ted Cruz was a signal that voters could be hearing a lot more from him. The El Paso congressman shattered […]
