Our ancestors domesticated dogs by sharing leftover meat during the last Ice Age, new study suggests

Pyrenean mountain dogs guard a herd of goats and sheep in Brandenburg, Germany, 2019. Soeren Stache/picture alliance via Getty Human hunters bagged more game than they could safely eat during the last Ice Age. Rather than waste the excess meat, they fed it to wolves, which evolved into domesticated dogs over time, a new study suggests.  Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. Despite how it may have felt, 2020 was shorter than previous years - Earth is spinning quicker than it has in decades

A photo of Earth taken by NASA's Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC). REUTERS/NASA/Handout via Reuters/File Photo Earth's 28 fastest days ever recorded happened in 2020. On average, the planet rotated more quickly around its axis last year than it did in previous years.  Scientists who measure the speed of Earth's rotation think 2021 may be even faster than 2020. If so, they may need to subtract a second from the year.   Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. As it t...

Confined growth of ZIF-8 in organosilica nanoparticles to regulate mRNA translation

mRNA based technology is a hot topic particularly in light of the recent clinical trials of mRNA vaccines against COVID-19 pandemic. However, the hard-to-transfect nature in antigen presenting cells (APCs) has been a long-standing challenge for mRNA expression to proteins. Scientists in Australia developed dendritic mesoporous organosilica nanoparticles (DMONs) with ZIF-8 grown partially inside the mesopores. The resultant DMONs-ZIF-8 showed enhanced mRNA delivery efficiency and safety profile t...

Transition metal 'cocktail' helps make brand new superconductors

Researchers from Tokyo Metropolitan University mixed and designed a new, high entropy alloy (HEA) superconductor, using extensive data on simple superconducting substances with a specific crystal structure. HEAs are known to preserve superconducting characteristics up to extremely high pressures. The new superconductor, Co0.2Ni0.1Cu0.1Rh0.3Ir0.3Zr2, has a superconducting transition at 8K, a relatively high temperature for an HEA.

Construction of carbon-based cell-like-spheres for robust potassium anode

Inspired by the structure of a biological cell, biomimetic carbon cells (BCCs) were synthesized and used as potassium ion batteries (PIBs) anodes. The unique structural characteristics of the BCCs resulted in PIBs that showed a high reversible capacity, excellent cycle stability and rate performance. The present strategy provides a new way for the design and manufacture of new biomimetic battery materials in the future, and promotes collaborative research across multiple disciplines.
