Will Virgin Galactic ever lift off?

It’s taken 17 years, with many setbacks and some deaths, and still Richard Branson’s space mission is yet to launchRichard Branson was running almost 15 years late. But as we rode into the Mojave desert on the morning of 12 December 2018, he was feeling upbeat and untroubled by the past. He wore jeans, a leather jacket and the easy smile of someone used to being behind schedule.Branson hadn’t exactly squandered the past 15 years. He’d become a grandfather, moved to a private island in the Caribb...

Cufflinks and the Caribbean: How Virgin Galactic kept space tourists' interest and money

Virgin Galactic's goal to fly tourists into space as early as this summer is about 12 years later than initially promised by its founder, British billionaire Sir Richard Branson. Right up there with a few minutes in space on Gislason’s bucket list is his time on earth with other space enthusiasts and Branson, a fellow adrenaline junkie known as much for his globe-trotting stunts as for starting his own airline. “It’s more than just a trip to space, it’s a huge, ongoing event,” said Icelandic t...

Branson's Virgin Galactic takes another step toward space tourism

Virgin Galactic’s chief astronaut instructor Beth Moses, who will train future space tourists, joined pilots onboard SpaceShipTwo VSS Unity to evaluate the customer experience and cabin. The WhiteKnightTwo carrier airplane took off soon after 8 a.m. local time (11 a.m. ET) from the Mojave Air and Space Port in California. It released the SpaceShipTwo passenger craft at an altitude of about 44,000 feet and then the spaceship was catapulted to 55 miles above Earth.

What’s next for commercial spaceflight? Passengers will soon get their turn

MOJAVE, Calif. — The first suborbital space passenger is less likely to be a billionaire like Virgin Galactic’s Richard Branson or Blue Origin’s Jeff Bezos, and more likely to be an as-yet-unnamed employee at one of their companies. That’s despite Branson’s promise, reiterated in the wake of Thursday’s successful test flight past the 50-mile altitude mark, that he’d be the first commercial passenger on Virgin Galactic’s VSS Unity within the next few months. The word “passenger” is key: We’re not...

Virgin Galactic completes crewed space test, more flights soon

The successful test flight presages a new era of civilian space travel that could kick off as soon as next year, with Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic battling billionaire-backed ventures such as Amazon.com Inc founder Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin, to be the first to offer suborbital flights to fare-paying tourists. Branson, who said he personally put up $1 billion toward the roughly $1.3 billion development costs for Virgin's space businesses, told Reuters he viewed competition with Bezos and othe...

Virgin Galactic's most recent test flight looks pretty dang impressive in a new video

For the first time in the company's history, Virgin Galactic made it more than 50 miles up above Earth.  According to the spaceflight company founded by Richard Branson, this marks the first time their spaceplane — called SpaceShipTwo — has made it to suborbital space. And they have the video to prove it. "Today, we have shown that Virgin Galactic really can open space to change the world for good," Branson said in a statement.  The next step for Virgin Galactic now hinges on when the compa...

Virgin Galactic flies to the edge of space for 1st time, setting the stage for commercial missions

And just like that, Virgin Galactic made it to space. For the first time in the company's 14-year history, the Richard Branson space outfit has sent one of their suborbital SpaceShipTwo spacecraft to space — at least by their definition.  A test flight on Thursday brought the company's VSS Unity ship — carrying two co-pilots — 51.3 miles up above Earth, making it the company's highest flight yet, once confirmed, according to Virgin Galactic.  Some define space as 100 kilometers —...

Richard Branson is taking a submarine down the world's largest sinkhole

It looks, at first, like a giant, flat, ink blot in the sea, but underneath this sinkhole – the largest in the world – is a cavern large enough to swallow two Boeing 747s with room to spare. Famed marine explorer Jacques Cousteau didn't discover the sinkhole, located in the Caribbean sea off the coast of Belize, but he did name it "The Great Blue Hole" in 1971, and it's been a magnet for scuba divers ever since. Now, in the first mission of its kind, Cousteau's grandson and Sir Ri...

Virgin Galactic completes first powered flight since  fatal crash in 2014

Virgin Galactic has completed its first powered flight since a fatal crash nearly four years, a milestone which Sir Richard Branson said brought space ‘tantalisingly close.’ The company has struggled to re-establish itself following the death of co-pilot Michael Alsbury, 39, who was killed when his aircraft crashed into the Mojave Desert in California in October 2014.
