Rental Agreements: Renting an Un-Permitted House

My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: CA At the current residence 1 year now. When I moved in the house was basically under construction and it took about 1 month for them to "button everything up". I'm now running into several issues with the LL, he's unresponsive to problems and simply doesn't care anymore. Yard hasn't been mowed in month, half the yard isn't even a yard (just a gross patch of dirt with metal sticking out of the ground) even tho I was promised to get it ...

Inventors Can Challenge their Own Patents – But Only at the PTAB

by Dennis Crouch The traditional rule of assignor estoppel prevents prior owners of a patent from later challenging the validity of the patent.  The doctrine stems from old property law cases and is based upon the idea is that the assignor “should not be permitted to sell something and later to assert that what was sold is worthless, all to the detriment of the assignee.” Diamond Scientific Co. v. Ambico, Inc., 848 F.2d 1220 (Fed. Cir. 1988); see Westinghouse Elec. & Mfg. Co. v. Formica Ins. Co....

Traffic Lights, Signs and Controls: "Keep Clear" 21461(A) Ticket in California

My question involves a traffic ticket from the state of: California I was stuck in a KEEP CLEAR area and got a ticket 21461(a) from an angry cop. He said I "deliberately" block him. What happened was that after I picked up my dinner I left the parking lot and make a right. The light not too far away was green so I kept going. Very soon I realized the car in front of me wasn't moving even when the light was green so I got stuck in the KEEP CLEAR area. I was super unlucky that the KEEP CLEAR ...

"When his book came out last year, I saluted Flake for doing something politically contraindicated and Rubicon-crossing, establishing himself..."

"... as the first Republican senator to call President Trump the domestic and international menace that he is. I applauded him for describing the president’s tweets as 'all noise and no signal' and for daring to charge his administration with Orwellian doublespeak, 'dividing us along fissures of truth and falsity and keeping us in a kind of low-level dread.' I said that Flake’s book had rhetorical power. But looking back on it, it didn’t. Jeff Flake’s book couldn’t even convince Jeff Flake. As o...

Over the past month I have given about a dozen talks in large conference settings with hundred of people, or at smaller intimate partner/ counsel lunches, or for people spanning the globe via webinar. The discussions have ranged in content and theme but all were legal industry favourites including: the state of the legal industry 10 years out from the great recession of 2018; the seat change from Baby Boomers to Millennials in firms, and what that means for the way work is done, how people are ...

Service of Process: Serving Summons Abroad

Senator Mike Lee makes the "conservative case for criminal justice reform"

Utah Senator Mike Lee has this new opinion piece at Fox News headlined "A conservative case for criminal justice reform." Here are excerpts: “Government’s first duty,” President Reagan said in 1981 and President Trump recently tweeted, “is to protect the people, not run their lives.”  The safety of law-abiding citizens has always been a core principle of conservatism.  And it is why we need to take this opportunity to pass real criminal-justice reform now. Although violent crime rose during the...
