North Carolina House Bill 86

I appreciate the folks on reddit/firearms keeping me up to date on the latest attempts at communist gun control in the North Carolina House of Representatives.  H.B. 86 is summarized as follows. AN ACT TO REQUIRE A PERMIT FOR THE PURCHASE OF AN ASSAULT WEAPON OR LONG GUN; TO REQUIRE A 72-HOUR WAITING PERIOD BEFORE A PURCHASED  FIREARM MAY BE DELIVERED OR OTHERWISE POSSESSED; TO PROHIBIT THE SALE OF AN ASSAULT WEAPON OR LONG GUN TO PERSONS UNDER A CERTAIN AGE; TO PROHIBIT THE SALE OR POSSESSIO...

Fort Trump? The Pentagon Takes a Step Toward Establishing Base in Poland

The Trump Administration has drawn criticism for considering U.S. troop withdrawals from Afghanistan and Syria, but it’s considering at least one new permanent military base overseas. It even has a suggested name: “Fort Trump.” Under Secretary of Defense for Policy John Rood is in Warsaw, Poland this week to discuss the proposed base, which would…

Conundrum of the Day.

So if Nancy Pelosi, as @CharlesPPierce so eloquently argues here, is violating the solemn oath she swore and is refusing to perform the duties required her of the US Constitution, shouldn't she be impeached? — Glenn Greenwald (@ggreenwald) March 12, 2019 Technical point: Removal would be by expulsion, not impeachment, and it would be done by a 2/3 vote of the House acting alone. Of course, it's not a serious proposal. It's not possible to remove members of Congress on ...

A belief in meritocracy is not only false: it’s bad for you

'We are true to our creed when a little girl born into the bleakest poverty knows that she has the same chance to succeed as anybody else …' Barack Obama, inaugural address, 2013 'We must create a level playing field for American companies and workers.' Donald Trump, inaugural address, 2017Meritocracy has become a leading social ideal. SCOTUS Map: February and March 2019

At a February 1 Hastings Law Journal symposium honoring retired Justice Anthony Kennedy’s 43 years as a federal judge, Kennedy bemoaned what he sees as the lack of “rational, enlightening dialogue” and the dissipation of the “social framework of decency.” Of the Supreme Court’s two newest justices (and former Kennedy clerks), Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh, Kennedy had only ringing endorsements: “[Gorsuch is] going to be a wonderful judge, just like Brett.” The San Francisco Chronic...

Modification of Custody: Second Opinion on Child Custody Case. Many Concerns

My question involves a child custody case from the State of: California Hi Group, I am looking for a second opinion on a child custody case that has 50/50 orders established. We have discussed some of these concerns with the current attorney, but was told "you don't have enough proof... this is as good as it will get... be grateful for 50/50... if you go back to court you could end up losing time...". But with the situations below, I would just like some input on if we should accept this an...

Federal Taxes: Lump Sum Disability Payments

What and how do you handle lump sum payments for disability? I was awarded Social Security Disability starting in August 2017. I was given a $11, 000 lump sum check in January of 2018. $3000 of that 11,000 was taken to pay the attorney so I only received a little over $7000. My Form SSA-1099 reflects that extra $11,000 in my total benefits for 2018 (Box 5). How do I handle the $11,000 and $3000 on my 2018 income taxes? One of the tax programs says I count it as income but that then sho...
