The most advanced medicine today cannot instant...

The most advanced medicine today cannot instantly cure any illness. It takes time and effort of the physician, the cooperation of the patient and the working of any medicine or procedure to achieve a cure. Yet in today’s Gospel, the cure of the paralytic was done instantly, at the word of Jesus. Nobody can cure instantly, except God. The teachers of the Law were correct in thinking that only God can forgive sins. Sin and forgiveness, while real, are not concrete tangible realities. Thus, when, b...

Unsealed court documents reveal that Facebook knew kids were being tricked into spending thousands of dollars on their parents' credit cards

In 2012, Facebook settled a class-action suit with parents who claimed that their kids were being tricked into spending real money on game items, thinking they were spending virtual in-game currency; the parents said that Facebook had structured its system to allow kids to use their parents' credit cards without the parents' intervention, unlike competitors like Google and Apple, who required password re-entries when a card was re-charged for in-game purchases. When the case was settled, th...

Fourth Amendment Limits NYC’s Demands for Airbnb Customer Records

As part of its ongoing crackdown on short-term lodging, New York City passed an anti-Airbnb ordinance scheduled to take effect next month. HomeAway was also affected by the law, but I’ll focus on Airbnb. The ordinance addresses the challenges faced by the enforcement agency because Airbnb “Listings do not include a host’s full name, email address, telephone number, or the rental property’s exact address; Airbnb securely stores that information.” The ordinance requires Airbnb to provide monthly r...

... in her lesson to Congresspeople on how to do Twitter. Oh! Was that failing to talk like the generic "older woman" while being the specific older woman I readily admit I am?Goodness gracious! I ought to withdraw from the fray and make toast and tea.To be fair to AOC, she also said, "Don’t try to be anybody who you’re not" and "The top tip, I think, is really to be yourself and to really write your own tweets so that people know it’s you talking." Expungement and Sealing: How Do I Obtain a Police Record

My question involves criminal records for the state of: South Carolina A few years ago I was arrested, but the warrant came from a different county (Charleston). I was arrested in a different county only to be extradited to the county where the warrant was. I was wondering do I call the police department in my home county or the police department in Charleston?

Speeding Tickets: Ticket for Short Burst of Speed to Pass Wall of Cars (Pacing)

My question involves a traffic ticket from the state of: Washington I was driving towards Seattle last November at around 65-70 mph, with the flow of traffic. At one point there was a wall of cars going exactly the speed limit that everybody was getting caught behind. Cars were squeezing through as spacing behind this wall would allow, and I did the same. I followed one car closely (admittedly a bit unsafely) and once there was enough space, squeezed though and accelerated to get clear of the w...

"President Trump plans to use remarks from the Diplomatic Reception Room on Saturday afternoon to propose a notable immigration compromise, according to sources familiar with the speech."

"The offer is expected to include Trump’s $5.7 billion demand for wall money in exchange for the BRIDGE Act — which would extend protections for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) — and also legislation to extend the legal status of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders, according to a source with direct knowledge.... Advocates for the plan argue that by offering the new proposal, Trump is showing he’s willing to negotiate while Pelosi remains unmoved. But even some top Republican...

I will ignore... and resist...

It's sentence-diagramming time at Althouse. Today's sentence comes from Roger Cohen in a NYT column titled "The Strange Persistent Troubling Russian Hang-Up of Donald Trump": I will ignore the hermetic sealing of Trump’s personality against decency, and resist the temptation to riff on Abraham Lincoln’s brooding portrait in the White House dining room above the buffoon in chief with his burgers, to ask a simple question: If President Donald Trump is a Russian asset, what would he be working to a...
