My Most Popular Posts of 2019

The LegalBoard is back, baby! Every year for the past decade, I have compiled a year-end list of my most-popular posts. Two years ago, by a wide margin, my top-viewed post was about the debut of the LegalBoard, a keyboard designed for lawyers. This year, the LegalBoard again takes the top spot, thanks to a post about its new wireless version. This was not the first time that variations on the same product took the top spot. In 2010, the first year I started compiling a year-end list, my most-pop...

How to fire an employee

The Wall Street Journal recently asked this simple question: What's the Best Way to Fire Someone? I have some thoughts. Before you pull the trigger, ask yourself, "Is this employee going to perceive that the decision was fair." Did the employee have notice of the issues that caused the termination? Had the employee recently complained or otherwise engaged in protected activity? To look at this issue another way, mock-jury your decision. If the employee lawyers up and sues, will a jury think ...

Oversimplifying Ammunition Ballistics

Via Say Uncle, this comes to us from Tam. Super Vel Ammo: I have to vent. What kills me is how they’re hyping 90gr +P .38 Spl & 9mm and 185gr +P .45ACP bullets as if the last thirty years of accumulated terminal ballistics knowledge hadn’t even happened. Flying dimes with no sectional density moving at Warp Factor Six are how we got Miami and then wound up spending twenty years wandering in the .40 caliber wilderness, and the shit is being pimped by people who should goddam well know better beca...

'White queers are really good at erasing us': the lives of LGBTQ Somali-Americans

Minneapolis is known for its large Somali-American and LGBTQ communities. But for those who are part of both, a sense of belonging can be hard to findHassan remembers watching his friend spiral. It was 2013, and Hassan’s 25-year-old friend had just told his family that he was gay. They disowned him and rebuked him publicly before kicking him out of their house. Hassan’s friend descended into a deep depression and drank heavily, drifting to the edge of his circle of friends before falling off the ...

New Minister, Same Focus?

Outgoing Minister John McCallum received a standing ovation at the CBA conference for immigration lawyers in 2016. It was evident from his keynote address and from fielding questions, that he understood key issues and he had a plan for fixing some of the problems. His leadership at the department has been brief but they have managed to accomplish significant milestones. As of 10 Jan 2017, we have a new Minister, the Honourable Ahmed D. Hussen. The questions become: will this disruption in the de...

The Guardian view on child refugees: an appeal to give what you can | Editorial

This year’s Guardian and Observer appeal is asking for the help of readers to support three charities that are making a difference for child refugees• Click here to donate to our appealHassan was 14 when he fled Damascus on his own to join family in western Europe. He has made it safely to Athens. Like many of the young refugees, what he most wants is the chance of an education and a future. But now he is stuck, and he has been for weeks. One of the toughest things these young lone refugees must...

Alone in Paris, refugee children frantic to see their British families

This year’s Christmas Appeal supports three refugee charities. Two boys in France who are being helped to make to make their UK asylum claims talk about their lives and dreams• Donate to the Guardian and Observer Christmas appealFrom a distance, he seemed strangely well fed for a child who had been travelling alone for 18 months. Closer, it became evident that Hassan was only trying to stay alive. Wrapped around the 16-year-old’s slender frame were seven coats. The outer layer, a quilted puffer ...

FN 5.7 And The Army Handgun Competition

I had missed this in June from Bob Owens: I’m also perplexed that FN submitted the Five-SeveN, as the gun’s 5.7×28 caliber has been thoroughly trashed by most defensive handgun experts as a niche round that fails to create adequate tissue damage to have significant immediate impact on targets. The FN 5.7 won’t be the next Army handgun, but it doesn’t perplex me at all, and frankly I wouldn’t pay much attention to defensive handgun “experts” as they trash things.  And this is as good a chance as ...

‘This seems like a solvable problem’: Jude Law on helping Calais’s refugees

As France prepares to dismantle part of the Calais refugee camp – evicting more than 3,000 people – British stars including Jude Law and Tom Stoppard visited to show their support. Can they make a difference? Related: British writers and actors urge David Cameron to rescue refugee children ‘Where are the English celebrities?” three young Afghans laugh as they walk towards me. When I tell them they’ve missed their chance to spot a celeb, they feign mock outrage. “Do you know who Jude Law is?” ...
