Whicker: Case Keenum and Jared Goff have both awakened from their 2016 nightmare

CARSON – So here was Case Keenum, once again the perfect set-up man for Jared Goff. On Monday, Goff will throw majestic spirals in the Coliseum as the Rams meet Kansas City, the most nacho-worthy attraction of the NFL regular season so far. On Sunday, Keenum was bobbing and weaving, taking what the defense and life in general gave him. Given a chance to win, he did. On second-and-16, with the clock chugging into its final 30 seconds and with no timeouts at hand, he threw nine yards to Matt LaCos...

Penalties, sloppy play spoil Chargers’ return home

CARSON – As Keenan Allen reeled in his second score in two weeks, the Chargers wideout made a beeline for the bleachers. From the stands, Allen procured a blue championship belt. The Chargers were still feeling good at that point, just before the half, and as Allen strutted a few steps through the end zone, belt wrapped around him, a penalty flag flew. Allen was called for unsportsmanlike conduct and charged 15 yards. Sign up for Home Turf and get exclusive stories every SoCal sports fan must r...

Eric Spoelstra endorses Luke Walton: ‘He’s the perfect guy to coach that team’

MIAMI – As expectations ratcheted up once LeBron James signed with the Lakers in July, Luke Walton had at least one comforting thought entering the season: Someone has done it before. No one can appreciate the magnitude of Walton’s challenge better than Eric Spoelstra, who like Walton was starting his third year with the Heat when The Decision in 2010 changed the scope of his job dramatically. Spoelstra and Walton acknowledged they talked in the offseason, with Walton saying the conversation las...

Second-half scoring woes plague USC in recent losses

As USC has seen its record tumble below .500 over the past two weeks, its collapses have started in the second half. The Trojans have been unable to score enough points after halftime. In a 34-27 loss at UCLA on Saturday, their first in the crosstown rivalry since 2014, they managed to tally only a field goal in the second half. The previous week, they were shut out by Cal over the final 30 minutes of the loss. When Coach Clay Helton reflected on the latest defeat on his Sunday teleconference, h...

NFL Winners and Losers: Once left for dead, Cowboys now in driver's seat of NFC East

After the Dallas Cowboys lost to the Tennessee Titans on Nov. 5, a Dallas Morning News column proclaimed “Jason Garrett is finished.” The Fort Worth Star-Telegram assured everyone that Jerry Jones wouldn’t fire Garrett during the season. Less than 14 days after that Cowboys loss, when it looked like their season was dead and Garrett was on borrowed time, Dallas might be the new favorite in the NFC East. The NFL pretty much changes week to week, but the Cowboys rising out of the grave in such a s...

About last night: A review of UCLA’s 34-27 win over USC

USC fans infiltrated UCLA territory last week and spray-painted UCLA’s Bruin statue USC colors, but after a 34-27 win at the Rose Bowl on Saturday, UCLA’s final paint job will be more meaningful when the Bruins get to paint the Liberty Bell blue. UCLA ended its three-game losing streak to USC behind a record-setting day from running back Joshua Kelley and a stout fourth-quarter defensive performance. The Bruins ended one losing skid, but face an even longer one this week: UCLA finishes the seaso...
