Comment on world peace cookies by Chelsea

I love, love, love these cookies. But I find the dough incredibly difficult to work with: in order to have a dough that will even attempt to cohere to itself, I have to reduce the flour by at least 2 TB. I triple-checked the recipe the first two times I made it (I was literally coming up with a dough like mildly wet sand – it hardly stuck to itself at all, and after refrigeration a knife just made it fall apart again). Tips? Hints? Anyone else had this issue? I didn’t see anyone else complainin...

Newsom should pump the brakes on single-payer

Governor-elect Gavin Newsom is an ambitious man, and nowhere is his ambition more conspicuous than in his grand plans for expanding California’s health care entitlements. The state projects nearly $15 billion in surplus funds next year if economic trends continue. Newsom doubtless feels the moment for big changes has arrived. Acting on that heady emotion, however, would be a serious mistake — beginning with the numbers. California has been deep in the black before, only to wind up well into the ...

Sabres ride six-game win streak; Flyers may change goalies

The Philadelphia Flyers appear ready to make a goaltending change Wednesday when they visit the Buffalo Sabres, who are going so well they just want things to stay just the way they are. While indications on Tuesday were that Alex Lyon, who played in 11 NHL games last season, would make his season debut for the Flyers in the game at KeyBank Center, the Sabres will be trying to extend their winning streak to seven games. Buffalo scored four straight goals, capped by team captain Jack Eichel'...

Emergency officials fret over potential evacuations as rain threatens Woolsey fire communities with mudflows

Dozens of victims of the Woolsey fire trickled in to the Conrad H. Hilton Foundation building in Agoura Hills throughout the day Tuesday, many of them seeking help rebuilding lives that have been shattered by the destructive blaze that burned through Los Angeles and Ventura counties over the last two weeks. “People are coming in shell-shocked,” said Jenni Campbell, a volunteer at the makeshift center housing federal, state and local workers connecting victims with government services. Campbell, ...

Injury-plagued Capitals come off road to face Blackhawks

The Washington Capitals return home from a successful four-game trip to host the Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday night. Holtby missed three games and was slated to make his return against the Blackhawks, but when the Montreal Canadiens scored three goals in 75 seconds Monday night against Phoenix Copley, coach Todd Reirden inserted H...

Goalie Announcements (Nov 20)

Two of our five surviving teams registered wins on Monday night, Wes and Jeremy each picking up their wins, leaving only Troy, Stacey M. and Mike to get wins through the rest of the week. That won't happen on Tuesday night, as there is only one game and the projected goalies won't have any one of those three, although Mike is losing out on a start, as the Oilers will be going with their number [Author: Clayton Corley]

From Arleta to Sierra Canyon, EJ Gable’s football domination continues

Sierra Canyon running back EJ Gable is listed at 5-foot-6, 150 pounds. “I play with my heart,” Gable said. “I know I’m the smallest one out there every game.” A player who has run for more than 1,200 yards and 21 touchdowns this season plays with more than just heart – Gable’s got talent. The self-aware senior transferred this year to Sierra Canyon from Arleta High, a Division I L.A. City Section program where he tallied 2,183 all-purpose yards, including 1,465 yards rushing, and scored 32 touch...

Excessive speed cited in fatal crash that started brush fire near San Gabriel Dam

The California Highway Patrol cited excessive speed as the cause of a crash that left one person dead and roughly three acres of mountainside burned from a brush fire on Monday evening outside of Azusa and Glendora. Officials said the person was driving south on Highway 39, just south of the San Gabriel Dam, when the crash happened at approximately 5:15 p.m. “The driver was driving at an unsafe speed and was unable to navigate the curvature in the roadway,” the CHP said in a statement Tuesday. “...

Dodgers add prospects Keibert Ruiz, Edwin Rios and Yadier Alvarez to 40-man roster

LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers added prospects Keibert Ruiz, Edwin Rios, Yadier Alvarez, Josh Sborz and Matt Beaty to their 40-man roster Tuesday, each for the first time. The moves protect the group from next month’s Rule V draft. The Dodgers’ 40-man roster is currently full. To make room on the roster, the Dodgers designated right-hander Erik Goeddel, left-hander Zac Rosscup and utilityman Tim Locastro for assignment and released right-hander Tom Koehler. The Rolling Stones and today’s politically correct culture

This week, the world’s greatest rock and roll band announced a 2019 U.S. tour. The Rolling Stones will play to packed stadiums across the country, starting at Miami Gardens’ Hard Rock Stadium in April and ending at Chicago’s Soldier Field in June. They’ll be at the Rose Bowl on May 11. After more than 50 years of extraordinary success, it’s fair to say the Rolling Stones are not just a band, they’re marketing geniuses. So it’s interesting that the name they chose for this tour is “No Filter.” It...

Prospects Jose Suarez, Luis Madero and Luis Rengifo added to Angels’ 40-man roster

The Angels added starting pitchers José Suarez and Luis Madero and infielder Luis Rengifo to their 40-man roster, designating pitcher Parker Bridwell and infielder José Fernández for assignment. Tuesday was the deadline for teams to add players from their minor league system to the 40-man roster, protecting them from the Rule 5 draft. The Angels have filled all 40 spots. One of the somewhat surprising omissions is first baseman/outfielder Jared Walsh, who General Manager Billy Eppler had identif...

The latest abuse of the Americans with Disabilities Act

Yes, it is also abused. But since it was signed by President George H. W. Bush in 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act has opened up a vast new world to people who use wheelchairs or are otherwise differently abled. That world is the world others take for granted: the upstairs, the downstairs, the public bathrooms. Now, in retrospect, putting up handrails and laying down ramps in that physical world, while often costly, was relatively easy for businesses and property owners to understand ho...

Penguins Trying to Stay the Course During Bumpy Start

PITTSBURGH — Mike Sullivan’s regular film sessions with the Pittsburgh Penguins don’t lack for clues on why one of the NHL’s marquee franchises is in the midst of its bumpiest stretch in more than a decade. The defence can morph into a disjointed mess under sustained pressure, particularly right in front of the net. The crisp breakouts that used to trigger odd-man rushes featuring some of the league’s most skilled players moving at warp speed have largely vanished and been replaced by some...
