Mariners have torn their core asunder, but will it lead to a bright future?

Who's to know if Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto did the right thing by trading three All-Stars and almost every vital part of his ballclub. The thing is a rebuild of this magnitude could take at least four years to see positive results, and even then there are no certainties.

In swearing-in ceremony, LA County Sheriff Alex Villanueva promises new direction for department

During his swearing-in ceremony on Monday, Alex Villanueva, the new sheriff of Los Angeles County, paused for a moment during his remarks as he heard a woman shouting in the audience. “Si se puede,” the woman said, still sitting but chanting and jabbing her fist. “Si se pudo,” he said back in Spanish, pointing at the woman. “Yes, we could.” Cheers from activist groups punctuated the ceremony at East Los Angeles College. The same groups in the past have had few occasions to rejoice in electing a ...

West Valley residents urge LAUSD to steer clear of converting sites into shelters for homeless youth

A plan to house homeless youth at LA public schools has drawn the ire of West San Fernando Valley residents. The effort would be a collaboration of city and county agencies, private companies and nonp...

Goalie Announcements (Dec 3)

It's the dawn of the second segment!  The new goalies are active on the hockey pool rosters, seven of them were picked up last week and three of them got the call to play on Monday night, so these are exciting times.  This will really get the participation numbers up in the hockey pool, right off the bat! Week Nine Waiver Draft (Dec 4)

The offer was dangled out there, teams had the ability to think it over just a little bit longer and I can confirm that there were a few teams going back and forth about making that last move, debating on whether or not they could get enough out of their replacement players or whether or not the injuries to their current players were as bad as they thought.  The end result, as the clock struck [Author: Clayton Corley]

Alexander: No, the Desert Classic will not go unsponsored

LA QUINTA — On today’s PGA Tour, if your tournament doesn’t have a sponsor’s name attached it means one of two things. Either you’re a major and you’re too big to fail, or you’re in trouble. The Tournament Formerly Known As The Bob Hope has been down this sponsorless road before, in 2010 and 2011, and at that point it was pretty well assumed that the Coachella Valley’s annual January tour stop was at death’s door. Chrysler ended a sponsor relationship which had begun in 1986, no one was stepping...

What’s the legacy of George H. W. Bush?

The tributes in the obituaries of the late President George Herbert Walker Bush have been effusive and kind in the wake of his death Friday night at his Houston home, aged 94. It entirely marked the passing of an era, many noted — the time of the greatest generation that won World War II. Every president from Franklin Delano Roosevelt through “the first” Bush served in that war, meaning it was the major event in the lives of our national leaders from 1940 through 1993. Bush served as president f...
