LOS ANGELES — Regardless of how the Toronto Raptors fared Tuesday against the Clippers, Kawhi Leonard was going 0 for 2 in games at Staples Center this season. Dodgers’ Clayton Kershaw might want to pick up speed – but is it necessary?

LAS VEGAS — Clayton Kershaw might feel a need for speed. But the Dodgers don’t necessarily share it. When Kershaw signed his contract extension with the Dodgers in November, he said he planned on “proving a lot of people wrong” if they think he is in decline. Part of his plan to make that happen is to regain some velocity on his fastball. Last season, Kershaw’s heater averaged a tepid 90.9 mph – the lowest of his career and the continuation of a four-year downward trend that coincided with his r...

Alex Ovechkin isn’t slowing down

At 33 years old Alex Ovechkin is not supposed to be scoring goals at this sort of pace. The typical aging curve for NHL players, even the elites, says they are supposed to be slowing down at this point in their career and seeing their numbers slide south in a downward trend. With three more goals on Tuesday night in the Capitals’ 6-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings, the game’s greatest goal-scorer added to his league leading total and now sits atop the NHL with 25 goals through his team’s first...

Angels planning to allow farm system to continue to grow

LAS VEGAS — Billy Eppler has a very clear plan to get the Angels back to perennial contention. It’s about the farm system. On the second day of the Winter Meetings, the Angels general manager spelled out a plan that doesn’t seem to include blockbuster trades that would weaken their farm system. “We are clearly trying to build organizationally,” Eppler said. “I think anybody can figure that out now. We haven’t traded a lot of our players in our minor league system. Nobody impactful. Nobody in the...
