Horse racing: Red King takes San Juan Capistrano Stakes at Santa Anita

It took a year, but trainer Philip D’Amato’s $35,000 investment in February 2019 paid dividends on closing day of Santa Anita’s spring meet on Sunday. Red King, claimed by D’Amato last year at Santa Anita with hopes he would win the marathon San Juan Capistrano Stakes with the 6-year-old son of English Channel, finished third in the 1 3/4-mile turf race last year, but he got the job done one year later. Although Red King let him down last year, D’Amato still won the $100,000 Grade III event with...

San Pedro statues tied to colonization and racism are vandalized

San Pedro residents learned “colonizer” had been sprayed onto a statue of a Spanish conquistador at Cabrillo Beach and red paint was poured onto another depicting a supporter of the Chinese Exclusion Act, so they rushed to clean them before crowds arrived to celebrate Father’s Day on Sunday, June 21. A member of the community was at the beach at about 7 a.m. when she noticed that blood-red paint had been poured over the heads of statues resembling Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo and for...

Simpson celebrates a Father's Day win at Harbour Town

Nothing can top the first time Webb Simpson won on Father's Day, a U.S. Open title eight years ago at Olympic Club and hearing his father's laughter on the phone to share the joy. Harbour Town was special in its own right. Dressed in his Sunday yellow shirt - his late father's favorite color - Simpson emerged from a crowd of contenders with five birdies in a six-hole stretch on the back nine for a 7-under 64 to win the RBC Heritage by one shot over Abraham Ancer and set the tour...

Simpson wins RBC Heritage at Harbour Town

The 34-year-old father of five made sure it was an extra special Father's Day by recording his seventh career win on the tour after his bogey-free 64 saw him finish on a combined 22-under-par 262, a stroke clear of Mexico's Abraham Ancer (65). At one point early on it looked like play might have to be completed on Monday after thunderstorms forced a two-hour and 45-minute delay but rain and lightning then gave way to sunshine at the Harbour Town course on Hilton Head Island. "It&apos...

Liverpool held by Everton on resumed mission to seal title

There was no victory for Liverpool on the longest day of the year, which could mean an even longer wait to clinch the Premier League title. The quietest of the 236 Merseyside derbies, with fans denied access to Goodison Park, produced no goals as Everton held Liverpool to a 0-0 draw on Sunday. ''Everton was obviously here to make our lives difficult,'' Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said.
