Roster shuffle: Plans change in MLB because of health issues

A small group of players, including Nationals slugger Ryan Zimmerman and Rockies outfielder Ian Desmond, have announced they plan to sit out this season. The Minnesota Twins have shuffled their on-field staff to protect the health of some of their older coaches. Zimmerman, who told The Associated Press last week he still was deciding whether to play this year, ultimately said having three young children, including a newborn, and a mother at higher risk because of multiple sclerosis factored in...

LA committee OKs buyouts for soon-to-retire city employees

Some Los Angeles city employees may get the chance to take an early retirement, with the City Council’s Budget and Finance Committee backing the idea Monday as an option that could reduce proposed worker furloughs. The city’s initial plan was to furlough 15,000 employees for a select number of days due to the financial effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The proposed furloughs equated to about a 10% reduction in annual pay to save about $139 million. Most public safety positions are exempt from th...

Public access to police officer disciplinary and use-of-force cases in California, including records about racist and discriminatory acts by cops, would be greatly expanded under legislation introduced Monday in Sacramento. Why did Heat and Iguadola do two-year extension before trade? Iguodala offers clarity

The Heat decided, before the pandemic, that it was better off having Andre Iguodala on its salary cap at $15 million next season, and the good possibility of impending free agent Jae Crowder on its cap, too, instead of the pre-trade deadline scenario of having James Johnson at $16 million next season, Dion Waiters at $12.7 million and oft-injured Justise Winslow at $13 million.
