Comment on chocolate olive oil cake by Chelsea

Cake is delicious and glaze is too, but something weird happened when I made the glaze…chunks of it (the corn syrup?) solidified in the first 30 seconds in the microwave. Not sure why – old corn syrup? Too long in the microwave? Should’ve mixed before microwaving? Anyhow, I’d probably just use a chocolate chip and cream ganache next time. Also – I made this in an 8x8x3 pan and it only juuuust barely fit, though the volume should be the same as a 9′ round pan. So make sure your pan is tall!

A's Puk goes on IL, Giants without Belt, Longoria to start

Oakland Athletics left-hander A.J. Puk was placed on the 10-day injured list Monday with a strained shoulder and traveled to Los Angeles to be examined by Dr. Neal ElAttrache. Puk, a top prospect expected to be in the A's rotation once healthy, was also bothered by the issue during spring training months ago. A move to declare the tide pools at Royal Palms and White Point Beach in San Pedro — being hit in recent months by some in large groups taking more than the legal limits of creatures — a protected marine reserve appears to be getting some official backing. Los Angeles City Councilman Joe Buscaino supports the effort and has asked state Assemblyman Patrick O’Donnell, D-Long Beach, to further investigate the possibility in the wake of some illegal over-limit fishing that has become a growing  prob...

Hawthorne-based SpaceX launches South Korean Satellite, bests rocket turnaround record

Hawthorne-based SpaceX successfully launched a South Korean military communications satellite into orbit today from Cape Canaveral in Florida, in the process beating its own record for turnaround time in the reuse of a rocket. The Falcon 9 rocket blasted off at about 2:30 p.m. California time, following a roughly half-hour delay due to weather over Florida. The launch was originally scheduled last Tuesday, but was delayed due to a last-minute repair issue. The rocket was carrying the South Korea...

Three days of resistance and a fight for our streets

The presence of federal troops in Portland has galvanized Portlanders and there’s been a resurgence of protests at the Justice Center.(Photos: J. Maus/BikePortland) We will never have “safe streets” until everyone feels safe using them. That ostensibly obvious and simple concept has become anything but in the past few months since George Floyd was choked to death by a police officer in Minneapolis. Fryer: High school sports are now, more than ever, a team game

We now know when high school sports are scheduled to resume. OK. But will games actually be played? Or will they be delayed again? Or will there be another cancellation of all high school sports like we had this past spring? And if games are played, can people attend? That’s all up to you. And you. And you, and you and you. And me. The state’s COVID-19 data in recent weeks has not gone in the direction the decision-makers prefer. If the percentage of positive tests and the number of coronavirus-...
