Dodgers hit four home runs to pound Diamondbacks

Whatever challenges traveling in the midst of a pandemic might present off the field, the Dodgers are having no problems with it on the field. Edwin Rios, Matt Beaty, A.J. Pollock and Chris Taylor each hit home runs as the Dodgers beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 11-2 Saturday. The win was the Dodgers’ fourth in the first five games of this season-long nine-game trip. After scoring 17 runs and hitting .338 as a team in the first two games of the season, the Dodgers’ offense slowed down, batting .24...

Angels rally for 10th inning victory after blowing the lead in the ninth

ANAHEIM — Hansel Robles took the mound looking for a save, but his teammates saved him. After the Angels’ struggling closer gave up three runs in the top of the ninth to cough up a two-run lead, the Angels rallied to beat the Houston Astros 5-4 in 10 innings on Saturday. “To go home tonight, losing a game like that, and with a day game tomorrow, you’ve really got to search for the energy,” Manager Joe Maddon said. “Hopefully this will energize us a bit going into tomorrow.” The comeback helped t...

Lakers coaches start live scouting, keep an eye ahead for playoff opponent

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Hours before the rest of the Lakers arrived at The Arena at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, Miles Simon sat in a chair, taking notes. He was watching the Oklahoma City Thunder blow out the Utah Jazz, the upcoming opponent of the Lakers on Monday, scouting for schemes and play calls in the fan-less environment in the NBA bubble. And it’s one way the Lakers’ preparation has changed with all games an easy 10-minute ride away: Bench coaches can now see their foes live...

Del Mar: Thousand Words holds off favorite Honor A.P. to win Shared Belief Stakes

Back in March, before a disappointing fourth-place finish in the San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita, it was tough to find any analyst who didn’t have Thousand Words rated highly in their Kentucky Derby rankings. The Pioneerof the Nile colt was unbeaten in three starts and, though a bit of a grinder, looked every bit the part of a top Kentucky Derby contender. It didn’t hurt that he’s trained by Bob Baffert, who’s looking for his record-tying sixth Derby victory. But Thousand Words lost a lot of su...

Sparks’ comeback attempt falls short in loss to Storm

The Los Angeles Sparks had fought most of the way back from a 17-point deficit against the Seattle Storm on Saturday night. A Nneka Ogwumike layup brought the Sparks within three with 4:50 to play. But Seattle guard Jordin Canada wouldn’t allow a comeback. The former UCLA standout made a layup on the next possession, then found Jewell Loyd for a 3-pointer to rebuild the lead to eight. Then Canada hit two free throws with 35.5 seconds left, and the Sparks suffered a defensive collapse on an in-bo...

Tech firms duke it out with Trump again in a no-win situation

Emmy nominations came out this past week. It’s a shame the performances of our elected officials and tech barons in Washington were not considered. President Trump, as well as Senate and House committees, turned their attention to internet regulation, creating a spectacle that was mostly misguided and incapable of resolving any actual concerns about the growing power of big-tech firms raise in our democracy. Trump announced he was taking on regulating social media again. As is often the case, he...

Alexander: Restructuring high school seasons? It’s about the kids

When CIF Southern Section commissioner Rob Wigod stood up at a virtual press conference nearly two weeks ago and announced the coronavirus-forced changes that among other things pushed the start of the high school football season into January, there was one specific point he wanted to make. “Our student-athletes have had enough negativity over the last few months,” he said. “They are looking for us to bring them some positive news for the future.” That was a reminder: Whatever can be done to get...

Clippers sink franchise-record 25 3-pointers to rout Pelicans

The Clippers showed off some ridiculous range and made some team history Saturday in a lopsided 126-103 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans in the bubble at Walt Disney World Resort. Recovering from a choppy, sloppy reopening effort Thursday, the Clippers (45-21) righted themselves against an overmatched New Orleans team (28-38) that could do little to stop them – or the barrage of 25 3-pointers that eclipsed the franchise record of 24 set by the team earlier in a victory over Miami on Feb. 5 ...

Whicker: Honor A.P. runs out of racetrack at Del Mar

Since last year’s 2-year-olds began the long march to Churchill Downs, there have been several hundred thousand words devoted to Thousand Words. The never-ending story gained a couple of chapters Saturday at Del Mar. His victory in the mile-and-1/16th Shared Belief Stakes illustrates that a horse can disappear into, and emerge from, the stampede of 3-year-olds trained by Bob Baffert . In February, Thousand Words won the Robert E. Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita and gave Baffert his 3,000th victory. ...

Dodgers bench slumping Cody Bellinger for a day

A year ago, Cody Bellinger began engraving his name on the National League MVP trophy with one of the hottest starts in recent memory. Forty-five games into the Dodgers’ 2019 season, Bellinger was batting .409 with a 1.273 OPS and 16 home runs. That trophy is getting pretty heavy these days. Bellinger was just 5 for his first 36 (.139) in his first eight games as the reigning NL MVP and was benched for the start of Saturday night’s game by Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. “I think it’s one of those...
