Ethnic studies should be inclusive, not divisive

If you’re interested in humanity generally, then you likely are interested in the histories and exploits of those from another background, or a different color. You’d be curious how other societies developed, their customs and beliefs, advances or mistakes they’ve made. And you may wish the government would not steer you around in your study. Anybody would be enriched by such study, having their horizons expanded by greater knowledge of people from other walks of life. In recent times, that curi...

Corey Seager’s aggressive approach is paying off for Dodgers

LOS ANGELES – On the same day Mookie Betts returned to the Dodgers’ starting lineup, their most dangerous hitter kept plugging away in the No. 5 spot in the batting order. Corey Seager entered a three-game series against the Giants leading the team in batting average (.347), on-base percentage (.396), runs (10) and tied for the club lead in home runs (3). Chargers QB Tyrod Taylor getting ‘fair shake’ to start

Tyrod Taylor spoke enthusiastically Friday about the Chargers’ skill players, a group he called more talented than the ones he led as the Buffalo Bills’ starting quarterback for three seasons. But no topic of conversation got Taylor more excited than the never-ending debate of who’s the best high school quarterback to come from Hampton Roads, a southeastern area of Virginia that produced Taylor, former Falcons quarterback Michael Vick, Vick’s younger brother, Marcus, and Allen Iverson, a high sc...

53 LA County coronavirus deaths reported, but officials believe tech problems are resolved

Public health officials logged more than 50 new coronavirus-related deaths in Los Angeles County on Friday, Aug. 7, with the statistical landscape still clouded by technical snarls at the state level. However, state medical czar Dr. Mark Ghaly said Friday that the snags are nearly resolved and the backlog — affecting as many as 300,000 tests — should begin to clear within 1-2 days. While confusion over the numbers endured Friday, the number of people hospitalized in the county continued to decli...

OAKLAND, Calif. Q&A: What’s up with ban on TikTok and WeChat?

By Tali Arbel | The Associated Press President Donald Trump has ordered sweeping but vague ban on dealings with the Chinese owners of popular apps TikTok and WeChat, saying they are a threat to U.S. national security, foreign policy and the economy. But it’s far from clear what the administration intends to actually do when the bans take effect in 45 days, since the orders are currently blank checks waiting to be filled in. Uncertainty also surrounds what effect the orders will have on the apps’...

State lawmakers seek delay in effort to lift statewide eviction ban
