Coronavirus state tracker: 13,000-plus surge in cases on Aug. 10, partially due to state’s backlog

Even with not all of California’s 58 counties updating the daily new case counts for coronavirus the state had an estimated 13,268 new cases on Monday, Aug. 10. Nearly all counties cited a backlog of cases due to trouble with the state’s database. The CalREDIE Electronic Laboratory Reporting system is experiencing issues with the application that receives test reports from laboratories and then sends them to CalREDIE. California’s COVID-19 dashboard showed the state has had 101,361 new cases in ...

Alexander: Dodgers-Padres is closer to a fair fight

Dave Roberts certainly remembers the last time the Padres really believed they had a legitimate shot at catching and passing the Dodgers. He was the Padres’ bench coach in that optimistic spring of 2015, after new general manager A.J. Preller had loaded up on veterans to take a shot at dethroning the then two-time defending division champs. The Matt Kemp-for-Yasmani Grandal trade at the winter meetings was the centerpiece, but the Padres also brought in Justin Upton, James Shields, Wil Myers, Ia...

Western Conference play-in race keeps heating up as Lakers wait to learn playoff opponent

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Even though they may be the title favorites, the buzz in the NBA bubble hasn’t been about the Clippers or the Lakers. All eyes are on the race for the spots in the Western Conference play-in game, a scramble that’s as hot as ever with four teams within one game in the standings with two games left to play. A stacked Tuesday schedule means that a lot could be sorted out by the end of Tuesday night, giving the Lakers a narrower field for who their first-round opponent migh...

Coronavirus: LAPD officers’ union pushes back on party enforcement

LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Police Department officers’ union is pushing back against the potential use of officers in Mayor Eric Garcetti’s efforts to shut off utility service at homes hosting large parties. Garcetti announced the plan last week in response to two headline-grabbing house parties that attracted huge crowds despite a prohibition on such large gatherings due to the coronavirus pandemic. One of the parties ended in a fatal shooting. The Los Angeles Police Protective League, the u...

Court: LA County owes $8M to family of man killed like George Floyd

By DON THOMPSON SACRAMENTO — Los Angeles County must pay a full $8 million damage award to the family of a Black man whose death had similarities to the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, the California Supreme Court ruled Monday. While subduing Darren Burley in 2012, deputies “used their knees to pin him to the ground with as much body weight as possible,” according to the court’s unanimous ruling. It said Deputy David Aviles put one knee on the center of Burley’s back and the other...

Joe Maddon wants Angels players to relax amid early slump

ANAHEIM — In past years Joe Maddon would have had his team do American Legion Week — minimal pregame work, just show up and play — to help the players relax in the dog days of August. Except the dog days came early this season. The Angels have started this season in just the type of funk for which Maddon usually prescribes cutting back on work. It’s a little more tricky, however, to abandon batting practice when players are still trying to get their timing in the shortened season. While Maddon s...

HBO Hard Knocks preview: Austin Ekeler learning names; Sean McVay aware of robo-cameras

Austin Ekeler can’t recognize most of the newcomers on his team, and not because he’s big-time now with more money in his bank account and a recent promotion as the Chargers’ No. 1 running back. Ekeler is still the same welcoming teammate who went from undrafted rookie to star running back last season. He’s having a hard time remembering names because the get-to-know period known as the offseason program was canceled for coronavirus precautions. Ekeler met most of his new teammates last week for...

Young Rams joke, but running back Malcolm Brown takes elder role seriously

The Rams face no bigger question in this training camp than who will replace the All-Pro ballcarrier they released in March. Maybe one of their young running backs will fill the starting role. Or maybe it’ll be “running back by committee,” several sharing the load. If it’s a committee, Malcolm Brown will be its chairman. That doesn’t mean Brown, a fifth-year pro undrafted out of Texas, would lead the running backs in carries or yards. Rookie Cam Akers, a second-round pick from Florida State, and...

By Ryan Gorcey, Correspondent As parents grapple with distance learning this fall, many are considering tutors to help students keep pace. Here’s what to know and how to find a good one, based on interviews with teachers, parents, tutors and folks who run tutoring organizations: What should parents expect to pay? Between $20 per hour and $60 per hour, depending on the private tutor’s credentials and experience. Some centers, like Mathnasium, cost $200-$300 per month, but prices vary by zip cod...
