Saturday 16 August: Stirling Highland Games

Our plan for the day had us driving east to Stirling, not for golf, but to watch the local Highland Games. We’d been to Games in Perth back in 2016 and that day proved as memorable as any day spent on the links. I think I’ve always harbored some deeply held aspiration to become a Highland Games Champion in a field event. These dreams of glory stemmed from my early childhood fascination with the title character in a Scottish movie… Continue Reading →

Where do the Lakers and Clippers stand entering the playoffs?

LeBron James called it a rhythm — a feeling in his body that hums and tells him the playoffs are around the corner. To Paul George, it was “flow,” that ideal balance of team chemistry that just seems right. Both the L.A. contenders were feeling that groove back in March: The Lakers were 8-2 coming out of the All-Star break, knocking off their title rivals in one weekend. But aside from their loss to the Lakers, the Clippers were 7-2 after the break themselves, including trouncing the Nuggets who...

Nike Mercurial Superfly 7 CR7 JNR Boot Review

This past week, I have been testing the Nike Superfly 7 Academy CR7 boot. First I would like to talk about the design. The design on this boot is called a “Safari print.” It reminds me of a Dalmatian. The first time I saw them I said to my dad “are these called Dalmatian boots?” *This review is the first in our series of reviews that come directly from a youth soccer player, for youth soccer players. Check out Mckinley’s bio at the bottom of the review. How do they fit? The fit is interesting...

Pacific Coast Classic draw at Del Mar features six horses

Higher Power, the defending Pacific Classic champion, had to beat nine horses to win last summer’s running at the generous odds of 9-1. This year, he’ll have to defeat only five rivals as the 30th running of Del Mar’s signature race drew its smallest field since 2003 on Sunday. The purse, cut in half to $500,000 this year, might have had an effect on the number of entries. For example, Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella thought about trying his turf standout, United, in the race when he thoug...

Whicker: The Clippers’ eyes might be weary, but they’re still on the prize

If the Clippers ever won an NBA championship, you figured it would happen in a studio. You know, like the moon landing did. Steve Ballmer would dance at zero gravity while Doc Rivers planted the flag. Kawhi Leoanrd would launch a two-mile three-pointer, while Patrick Beverley jawed at whatever little green men he found. Such a faraway title would feel real enough. New Yorkers weren’t in Paris when Lindbergh landed. The parade was even more glorious when he returned. Four rounds of playoffs will ...

Coronavirus cases, deaths dip in LA County, but officials credit weekend reporting lag

Los Angeles County reported 1,192 new cases of COVID-19 and nine more deaths on Sunday, Aug. 16, bringing the county’s totals to 221,950 cases and 5,254 fatalities. Both numbers were smaller than usual, but officials with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health said the decrease reflects a weekend reporting lag. The department anticipates receiving backlog cases from the state electronic lab report, but data sources that track other key indicators, including hospitalizations and death...

Tuukka Rask May Have Played His Last Game For The Boston Bruins

from Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe, “There are things more important than hockey in my life,” he said, as relayed through the club’s media release issued late in the morning, “and that is being with my family.” It was nearly verbatim what he said in November 2018 when GM Don Sweeney granted him a leave of absence, thrusting the netminding duties that weekend entirely in the hands of Jaroslav Halak, the same guy who was tossed the car keys Saturday. What we have here is Déj...
