Rajon Rondo inactive for Lakers, but lends in-game insights

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — The mythical Playoff Rondo will have to wait. But Coach Rondo? He’s back on the bench. The Lakers were not ready Tuesday to activate Rajon Rondo, who was released from quarantine on Monday and practiced with the Lakers for the first time in a month since fracturing his right thumb. The 34-year-old is still working back into basketball shape. After three-on-three work on Monday, Coach Frank Vogel said Rondo’s hand had some soreness. But about five weeks out from his injur...

Rams see a fitter, faster Jared Goff as high-speed practice begins

THOUSAND OAKS >> Jared Goff opened training camp earlier this month with a joke. “I may have put on a couple of pounds,” he said when asked how he feels, adding with a laugh. “I don’t know if that’s muscle or a couple of cheeseburgers.” The Rams’ quarterback opened the padded-practice portion of camp Tuesday with the truth. Goff spent this unusual offseason focusing on his fitness. If his body is any beefier, it’s because he hit the weights, not the barbecue. He appears leaner and quicker on his...

Yes on Proposition 22 to save ridesharing and worker choice in California

Since the California Supreme Court in 2018 handed down its Dynamex decision, the state has been marching toward an inevitable showdown with app-based transportation firms such as Uber, Lyft and DoorDash. Those companies have built business models around the type of independent-contractor labor the court decision has largely banned. Voters will determine the outcome of the feud — and, most likely, the continued operation of these services in California — in the Nov. 3 election. Sponsored by those...

Swimmer files civil suit against former coach Scott MacFarland, USA Swimming, and the Mission Viejo Nadadores

Sarah Ehekircher this week recalled a conversation she had in recent years with Elizabeth Hahn, USA Swimming’s senior manager for SafeSport. At a time when USA Swimming was receiving heavy criticism from Congress, Olympians and survivors about the organization’s failure to adequately address a culture of sexual abuse within the sport, Hahn asked Ehekircher about potential steps USA Swimming could take to stem abuse. “Make it mandatory for coaches to listen to a survivor tell her story,” Ehekirch...

The significance of a Kevin Clinesmith guilty plea

Former FBI lawyer Kevin Clinesmith has agreed to plead guilty to falsifying a document. Because the FBI is a federal law enforcement agency with the power to arrest and charge Americans for crimes, falsifying a document is pretty serious business. It’s even more serious when you find out what he falsified: an email from the CIA. The altered document was used to persuade the highly secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court to approve the FBI’s application for a third renewal of a secret wire...

Monday 17 August: Spey Bay

For my money, The Moray Firth is the finest piece of coastal real estate on the the Scottish mainland. It hosts one wonderful links course after another and views across the inner Firth bursting with color and contour. The western shore on the south side of the Firth, approaching Inverness, looks onto the gorse and heater bedecked hills of the far shore. We’ve played links up and down the length of the Firth, from Castle Stuart over to Fraserburgh where… Continue Reading →

At LAUSD, a school year begins like none before

The hallways of San Fernando Middle School were quiet on Tuesday, Aug. 18, not in any way what a first day of school normally looks like — or sounds like. No sweaty teenagers in sweltering August heat. No horseplay between classes. No sheepish gazes of unrequited crushes after a summer of adventures. Aside from a small flow of students and parents registering for the first time and scattered maintenance staff and administrators, the campus was virtually empty. And the classes? Well, they will be...

Inside the Dodgers: Maintaining a prospect pipeline during a pandemic

Editor’s note: This is the Tuesday, Aug. 18 edition of the Inside the Dodgers newsletter from reporter J.P. Hoornstra. To receive the newsletter in your inbox, sign up here. Keibert Ruiz’s smashing debut Sunday got my mind spinning. His home run off Julio Teheran was plenty thrilling in the moment, and I ended up writing this about how it was particularly special for Ruiz’s mentor, Triple-A Oklahoma City manager Travis Barbary. I think the moment has even more stories to tell. The last couple ...

Chargers DE Melvin Ingram’s absence allows Uchenna Nwosu more edge reps

COSTA MESA — Conducting a training camp amid a pandemic has presented the Chargers with many challenges, but they likely never imagined having a contract dispute with a player who was watching practices from a close distance. Defensive end Melvin Ingram has been wearing his powder blue No. 54 jersey at practices, but he traded his pads for a sweatshirt. Ingram is declining to practice because he’s reportedly unhappy with his contract situation. Ingram’s defensive line teammate, Joey Bosa, isn’t ...
