Lakers say they aren’t pressing panic button after loss to Blazers in Game 1

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Kyle Kuzma may be a newcomer to the NBA playoffs, but after his first-ever postseason game, a loss to the Portland Trail Blazers, he grasped an essential truth of this time of the year: Don’t show weakness. Is he changing his routine after an iffy shooting night for him and his team? No, not at all. Does he think he should get a starting role after the Lakers fell behind early in both halves of Tuesday’s game? Of course he’s confident enough to think he should start, he ...

Tuesday 18 August: Nairn Dunbar and The Interweb

“Hurry up, will ya,” Jeff barked as I lumbered out the front door onto High Street. “We’re running late you slow poke.” I admit to being the cause of his concern. Slow to answer the morning bell, my head fuzzy from last evening’s indulgences of an alcoholic nature. A take away extra large white coffee got me revved up and I, in turn, got that Audi revved up. I love the sound of a turbo in the morning. We had… Continue Reading →

More details emerge on PBOT’s ‘Plan to Become an Antiracist Organization’

(Photo: Jonathan Maus/BikePortland) For an agency that once made traffic safety their number one priority, recent protests in support of Black Lives Matter have exposed a hard truth: Initiatives like Vision Zero are meaningless if they don’t address the root causes of racism, harassment and discrimination people of color face on our streets every day. To their credit, the Portland Bureau of Transportation was working on this issue long before protests flared up in the wake of George Floyd’s de...

Clippers’ Patrick Beverley misses Game 2 against Mavericks with strained left calf

The Clippers had to deal with the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday without their vocal leader, the guy his coach described as “unstatable.” Doc Rivers announced before tip-off that his squad would be without Patrick Beverley, their all-world pest, for at least that night’s game. The guard continues to be hampered by the strained left calf that sidelined him for five of the team’s bubble seeding games. Rivers said Beverley “just didn’t feel” right during shootaround Wednesday. “He just wasn’t moving...

Angels send struggling Julio Teheran to bullpen

It didn’t take long for Julio Teheran to get into the Angels’ rotation and then it didn’t take long for them to take him out. The Angels have sent Teheran to the bullpen after he had three rough starts, which Manager Joe Maddon has said is because he was just wasn’t ready after a June bout with the coronavirus. “He’s like the absolute poster child for being ill and getting started late and and having to be thrust into the situation where guys have had a little bit more time to get ready,” Maddon...

Dodgers’ Austin Barnes benefiting from new hitting coach — Mookie Betts

Austin Barnes has heard a lot of voices over the past two seasons as he tried to rediscover his identity as an offensive player. The ones inside his head were probably the worst. “I feel good mentally up there right now. I feel free up there mentally,” the Dodgers catcher said Tuesday. “I was a little clouded before. It’s hard to hit like that, that’s for sure.” The freedom Barnes has found recently has resulted in a seven-game hitting streak (through Tuesday) during which he is 12 for 24 with f...

Families of cancer patients sue Children’s Hospital LA after faulty freezer destroys stored stem cells

Families of five young cancer patients sued Children’s Hospital Los Angeles on Thursday, Aug. 19, over the 2019 malfunction of a cryogenic freezer that destroyed stem cells from dozens of children. The suits, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, allege the 1988-era freezer began breaking down decades ago and that staff recently deactivated an alarm on the device that was supposed to alert them when it was becoming unstable. “What happened at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles is tragic. And it was ...

Uber, Lyft to temporarily halt California service if drivers are reclassified as employees

Ride-hailing giants Uber and Lyft say they will temporarily suspend service in California beginning Friday if they’re forced to reclassify their self-employed drivers as employees with benefits. In a blog post shared Tuesday with drivers, San Francisco-based Uber said California Attorney General Xavier Becerra had obtained a court order requiring rideshare companies to hire drivers as employees immediately — or else shut down. “We’ve appealed this decision, but if we are not successful in our ap...

Hoornstra: New sign stealing report corroborates evidence against Astros, Red Sox

This is a story about applying data to the game of baseball, one you haven’t read before. It’s about a science experiment. It’s about cheating. It’s about the sign-stealing scandals you know about, the (potentially illegal) sign-stealing you don’t know about, and all the would-be sign stealers of the future. Like any science experiment, this one began with a question. If we look closely at the swing habits of two teams Major League Baseball recently penalized for cheating – the 2018 Red Sox and ...
